This is a beautiful fort with a rich history. Take your time with this one. You will have to do a little research of your own to fully appreciate it since the museum was destroyed during Katrina. Sure hope the money gets found to give this gem the attention it deserves. Check out the Facebook page Historic Plaquemines Parish for some good information on the fort and the rest of the area.
For 5 years I've been visiting the area and have always wanted to visit this site. As a history teacher and veteran I have visited several Civil War Parks and finally had a chance to visit this one. Unfortunately I went on a Saturday and the park is only open Monday through Friday 7AM to 3AM. I was able to drive around the fort which appears to be unrestored from the outside. I will return during normal operating hours but that trip will have to wait for next years visit. I would love to give 5 stars but that will also have to wait for next year.
Decided to drive to the furthermost point in Louisiana (Well, at least down that highway), which is Venice and noticed Fort Jackson on the way down there. Parts of it were closed (gated) probably due to damage from Hurricane Katrina. Worth a look especially if you need some place to stop anyway. A maintenance worker driving through even stopped and gave me a brochure. Stop by and see this National Historic Landmark that played a part in the Civil War.
