This was the first trip for my wife and I to this plantation although we have been wanting to go for quite a while due to it being HIGHLY recommend to us by our good friends that have been going 3-4 times per year for the last few years. As soon as we arrived, I knew that we will be frequenting this place as often as possible from now on!! We stayed in the Pond House and we loved it !! Everything from the porch views of the pond and the plantation grounds thriving with tons of wildlife and just enough beautiful trees to provide privacy. The inside of the Pond House was so welcoming with beautiful beds and the jacuzzi tub was huge and Extremly relaxing!! The Cottage was very clean and smelled very nice. The provided breakfast in the cottage was perfect for our needs, complete with fresh milk, orange juice and the coffee pot was pre filled and ready to brew with only having to turn it on. As nice as the accommodations are, it still captures the full plantation home feeling! I really felt like I went back in time while there, but I know that the People in the late 1700's did not have some of the more modern furnishings that our generation have become accustomed to, haha! We were very happy to meet Mrs Anne and talk to her after hearing how wonderful she is from our friends that have stayed here and visited with her ump teen times. I have been to the Murtles once before but after staying here, I will not be staying at any other place in this area, Butler Greenwood is the place that has EVERYTHING that I like in a plantation getaway!! Some reviews that I've read were sub-par, but they were from people that seemed to be on a mission to complain about anything no matter how small!! Example: ( a scuff on the outside wall behind the firewood rack) ..... Just MY Opinion= I consider these people "creatures of comfort" they probably spoiled from only having/using the best and latest technology, and couldn't comprehend anything less, therefore this class of people should vacation in gated communities and NOT attemp to deter people from being able to enjoy a beautiful place of history that Mrs Anne is kind enought to share with everyone that wants to experience the history, beauty, hospitality and staff that go above and beyond to make your stay one to remember!! Sorry for the long review, ( and I tea could add a LOT more ) but if you are thinking about going here, and you love plantation settings, Do NOT listen to the few negative reviews. Just go and form your own opinion, YOU WON'T regret it !!Josh and Kim MarksPort Barre La
This is the place to go to get away and relax. If I remember correctly there has been 9 generations of the Butler family that has lived on this property. The current owner Anne Butler is a wonderful, thoughtful, kind southern lady. I'm truly glad that I have met her and I was able to spend a bit of time with her.The cottages that are rentable on the property are adorable. I've stayed in the Pond house and the old Cook house. The stars at night shine so bright and it is so very peaceful here. the cottages are clean and fresh. The beds are very comfortable.I was unable to make it there on my last trip down but I will definately be back to stay - this time in the pool house :)I stayed here in November 2012 and I was back down in New Orleans in 2014. I do try to come down every other year.Thank you very much Anne.
This is a great getaway from the city. You never have to leave the property. Beautiful, peaceful, well-kept grounds. We enjoy the independence and privacy. I've come here for over 10 years and have always had a great experience.
While passing through Saint Francisville, we decided to stop at this gorgeous plantation. The grounds are just beautiful gardens and trees, especially along with the wisteria. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The splendor of this grand place is up there with the Myrtles. It is also a B&B, that requires one to call ahead for reservations. The oak tree canopies that go from the from drive and to the house are purely majestic and magnificent. The inside tour lasts about fifteen minutes and entirely on the first floor. And it is still a privately own home. This place is worth stop and the time.
Butler Greenwood Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, has been in the hands of the Butler family since it was built in 1810. So it was extremely fascinating that we learned that our tour guide was Ann Butler, an author and historian with family genes. Not surprisingly, Ms. Butler has an extensive and thorough knowledge of Butler Greenwood's history. Located on highway 61, it is easily accessible. The 44 acres of grounds contains the plantation house, a gazebo and a rear brick kitchen. The gardens flanking the house remain one of the few extant examples of antebellum garden design in West Feliciana Parish. As a woman, Ms. Butler is particularly intrigued by the history of the plantation, which provides an excellent illustration of how southern women managed great southern plantations.
We waited on the porch and were greeted quickly and warmly by Mrs. Butler (we discovered later who she was) and were mesmerized by her on sight. She has the most genuine hospitality in her tine and manner, an impeccable southern Belle. She was gracious and thorough during the tour, pointing out interesting details throughout the house and giving us an appreciation of this early plantation. She invited is to walk the extensive grounds. We decided we will certainly stay on her cabins in our next trip through SF. Overall my favorite tour in SF.
Sweetest little tour guide you ever did meet!! Everything in the home is authentic and nothing had been restored or updated!!! Beautiful grounds and the friendliest and helpful staff!!! Will definitely stay in their beautiful bed and breakfast cabins on another trip!!!
Beautiful plantation with amazing history. Huge porch with pillars that seem to reach the sky that lead into a warm inviting museum styled home of one of the wealthiest plantation families of the south. It was used in the movie "North and South". The tour guide sat and spoke with us at length as not many visitors that day and made us very comfortable. The lawn is scattered with huge lush trees that give the place an inviting feel. They have weddings at this location and there is a separate area where guests can stay overnight that looks out onto the plantation and grounds. Very lovely, would recommend and visit again.
We have stayed here three times in the last four years. I can't say enough about Buttler Greenwood. Love the look and atmosphere! We toured the town of St Franciville great! And looked at different places to stay everybody in town suggested Buttler Greenwood. Would stay there again.
This plantation has majestic oak trees that are just charming and will take your breath away. This home is still run by the same family and will show you the way they live inside this home. Great stories to be told by family members. I loved being able to look down into the "cellar". The library is to die for! Be sure to meet the peacock as he is very fun to watch as he eats the cat food. I haven't stayed here, but husband and I are planning on staying in one of the cottages out by the lake.
I honestly cannot say enough about Butler Greenwood Plantation. Fate stepped in and led us to the doorstop of this lovely home and its wonderfuly gracious, original family member and current owner, Anne Butler. We stayed at Pond House and I will never forget the feeling of peace and tranquility I encountered there. I was renewed and rejuvenated both mentally and spiritually there and hope to be able to go back often.Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Anne!Sheila
Stopped in for a tour, as we were in St. Francisville staying at another plantation. The tour guide was the daughter of the owner of the plantation, I think. She was knowledgeable and friendly but it was a little awkward because it seemed like we were on a tour of her house and not a professional tour. It really is a beautiful plantation though. We took some really pretty pictures on their swing by the pond with the plantation in the background. A great time!
Great historical home with tour given by actual descendant of original owners. Very interesting!
We did a quick reconnaissance for B&Bs for a future visit (stayed at the Best Western). Several were somewhat tacky outliying buildings with poor views and surroundings. These were very attractive, all with views of a pretty pond and a surrounding large grassy garden suitable for croquet, bocce, picnics, or such.
After reading the negative post here I thought I should relate the experience I had when I visited the Butler Greenwood Plantation back in 1998 ( I had to put in a 2012 date to post). I was in LA on a business meeting and decided to play hookie and visit the area north of Baton Rouge and look at some of the historic homes. I was the only person at just about any of the plantations I visited and since I looked alot younger than I was I was mostly given a quick tour at most of the locations I went to WITH the exception of the Butler Greenwood Plantation. Ms Butler was very pleasant and seemed to like the fact that a young person would have an interest in the history of the area. Even though there was nobody else there she took the time to give me a complete tour with patience and kindness. Be sure to ask her about the sword that is displayed near the portrait...I still get chill bumps, very cool. I now have a family and have told my Wife many times that I want to take her and the girls to St Francisville and the Butler Greenwood will be FIRST on our list. The house and grounds are beautiful, be sure to take an empty photo card.
