We planned to stay here for just one night, in an RV spot, but ended up staying for three nights due to unforeseen circumstances. However you really couldn't ask for a better place to be stuck. We visited off season so the place was really quiet and peaceful - perfect for only our second night in the RV. The site itself was right next to the lake, and a very short 30 second walk put you down by the lake edge (we spent our first evening here sitting watching the sun set). The site was level, well marked out and had the advantage of picnic table and bench, fire ring and tent platform. Hook ups as expected and there was amazingly wifi! A bit of a life saver as there was little mobile phone signal for us. The other facilities are also superb, shower block a short walk away along with laundry facilities. But of course what makes the park is of course the amazing natural beauty, from the reservoir to the surrounding forest. There is also a beautiful new(ish) visitor centre and a beach with swimming area. Everything felt very well maintained, and whilst there are plenty of surfaced paths and roads to get you about it doesn't take much to get away from it and go for a hike. Due to our RV issues we weren't able to explore as much as we would have liked, but we did get to meet most of the park rangers and of course the camp hosts: and it is these people who really made our visit something to remember. You couldn't ask for a more helpful, friendly and pleasant bunch, and for us showed off Louisiana better than anything else. We would love to return, with a more reliable RV, or even better to rent one of the cabins - on one of our walks we had a look and they are amazing, in perfect locations with stunning views.A superb state park - manned by some of the loveliest people we had the pleasure of meeting in the USA. Will be back!
Stayed seven days at a great RV site with a wood deck. Bathroom very clean and several showers. Plenty of areas to fish. In the middle of no where, so u must like the outdoors and the company u r keeping.
We stayed in an RV in a regular camping site space . It was shaded and offered some privacy, but no view of the lake. The paved pathways were great for walking and my grandson caught two fish off the bridge to the visitors' center. The campground on the other side of the road from us did have views of the lake, a playground, and two floating docks. We didn't use the bath house or the cabins, but they looked very new and attractive. We were disappointed that the swimming area was closed because of an alligator. We went there for the swimming so it would have been nice if we had known the swimming area was closed before we went there.
Stayed here in a travel trailer with husband & two energetic boys. Our site (#2) had a deck in addition to the tent pad, picnic table, & fire pit/grill combo. We spent most of our time on the deck. There was a path behind our site that leads you out to views of the water. The boys tried fishing to no avail, but it was too hot for the fish maybe? : ) They had fun trying. Even though it was hot (mid 90's,) our spot was shaded & we were cool on the deck with a small fan. There were other sites with direct water views. The bathrooms were air conditioned and clean. We saw 2 playground areas. The Lakeview Trail is a nicely paved path that you can walk or ride bikes on. It leads you through the woods, over a wooden fishing bridge, to the large chalet style nature center & pavillion. The view from here is gorgeous. The nature center had childrens books & videos as well as interactive games on the wildlife & such in the park. Sort of like a cool children's museum. There was a soft drink vending machine also. The park has 2 short and unpaved looped paths that are worth hiking. Each brings you out to stunning lake views. The Hippie Point Trail was my favorite as it brought you right to the edge of the bluffs to overlook the expansiveness of Toldeo Bend. Looked like the ocean (as crazy as that sounds.) No land on the horizon. Breezy and the waves lap at the bottom against the rocks. Consider bringing a blanket or towel just to soak that whole experience in for a few minutes. It also takes you through dense forest area. Saw a turtle & 2 baby snakes - not hanging out together but separate. ; ) Bring water along with you, especially on the Bald Eagle Nest hike. That one is hilly in spots & a bit more strenuous. We also drove down the road just for fun to see the dam right before the Texas border. There is a small swimming beach to the right at the SRA Headquarters after you pass the dam. We went and checked it out because our park's beach was closed due to an alligator sighting. This is Louisiana. : ) The rangers and the camp hosts drove around frequently checking on things. They all were incredibly friendly, helpful, & informative to this family of city dwellers. One of the rangers told us that this park is around 10 years old. I did not see the inside of the cabins, but have been told by friends that they are nice. Primitive tent sites are available with one of them being wheelchair accesible.
Beautiful. We rented 2 cabins. We stayed in #18 our son and family stayed in #19.Cabins were nice. Clean linens and beds. A little dust on baseboard. But they are short handed and have a big turn over. Friendly lady at gate. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Had a great view of the lake plus shade. Sunset every evening. Visitor center was nice even had a library to set and read. They have weddings there over looking the lake. Great view. Nature walks everywhere. A clean beach. Little fish would nibble on your legs but the water was clear. the lake stretches forever it seems. Beautiful. We will go back. Nice shower house and laundry.
S. Toledo Bend SP is an easy, half-hour drive from Leesville. The park entrance is very nice -- and presents a sudden visual change from the typical backroad views in that part of the state. The fee station attendant was friendly; the day usage fee was two dollars per person (free for 3 and under and 62-plus). Golden Age/Access passes from LA, MD, AR, and DE are accepted, and ice and firewood was for sale. The Park offers well-paved, rolling roads amid abundant trees, curving around the fingers of the water; walking paths; modern cabins (some of the nicest in exterior appearance that we've seen) that are well-spaced with varying privacy and lake views; 55 premium- and improved-rated rv sites and unimproved tent sites, again with varying views and privacy levels; dump station; a couple play areas for children; a small picnic area by an inlet; restrooms and bath facilities that were super clean in winter; swim beach; boat launch; etc. The visitor center was currently closed. There is a discount for long-term winter rv sites; occupancy was about 10 percent the day of our visit, including the camp host. The Park was very clean and peaceful in January, and we'd definitely consider coming back to camp, or just to picnic again by the water, watching the beautiful (and patient) long-necked birds making their way along the shore. Also recommended is a quick check of the dam and hydroelectric facilities further south of the Park.
Very pretty views, great for water activities, good for family or just friends. A must see in the area
We stayed in our RV. Our spot was level. We had #26. Too many trees blocking our view of the lake. We drove to some of the other sites and found them to be more inviting. There aren't that many RV spots at South Toledo Bend and none of them have sewer hookups. Overall it's not a bad place but it could be better. We're making our rounds to all of the parks and I don't think we'll give this one a second visit.
The cabin was perfect, very spacious and clean, with all amenities. We rented #19, which is at the end of the road, next to the hiking trail. It was very quiet and relaxing. The only drawback is the view of the lake is not very good. Cabins 12 and 13 have a fishing pier, so I would recommend them for the view.
Such a great park - not too many RV spots but they have several really nice cabins. There are walking trails - bike riding is kinda tricky - hilly!! Nice with trees and they let you have campfires if not too dry! the swimming area could use some cleanup and improvements. Great for people that are into fishing. We just go because we like the park. If you plan to swim, I would have to reduce my excellent rating. Kinda far from any town but you can still go to Leesville, Many, and Hodges Gardens.
Spent a day here. I must say the cabins are .ice with direct t.v.,kitchen utensils. You must bring on linen. The lake is beautiful. If you are a boater be cautious many tree stumps. Nice bass fish catching if you are a fisherman. There is a playground for the kids and a nice water trampoline.
Too many reasons to list. But renting a cabin ranks high on the prioity list for things to do. You can fish off the piers or if your a true blue trophy bass hunter bring the boat your goona want it there!
Spent 5 nights here for thanksgiving. During that time we had 4 rv spots and 2 cabins occupied with family. Everyone had a great time. The concrete biking trails are great and the unpaved hippie trail was fun too. Kids like the nature center. The location is quiet. Wifi is very convenient because cell service is consistantly 1 bar.
Our church had a big outing there a few years ago at the new pavillion. It was spacious, comfortable and very nice. We all had a great time and were just a close walk to the water.
We really like to stay at this park when we go to Toledo Bend. The camping sites are well spaced. We have camped here several times.
