My wife, 6 year old, and 2 year old each enjoyed their visit. There were few other visitors this day. Therefore, we asked the man standing at the front of the ship taking tickets for an overview. He provided a great overview of the history. We had ample access to the entire ship. It was interesting to read the overviews on the posted documents. Thanks to all who served and serve today to protect our freedom!

I enjoyed the visit. The ship is in good condition, just needed some cleaning. I know there's only so much they can do, but the webs were a bit much. The guy who took the ticket gave me a little knowledge about the ship and a tidbit about a veteran. If I were a little bigger, I would not have been able to fit on the stairs. I'm 5'7 and had to crouch at times. This has nothing to do with the experience really; it's how ships were built and why there was a weight limit. The lady in the gift shop was friendly as well.

The USS Kidd is a wonderful place to take children. There is history and there is the Mississippi River to enjoy. The museum is furnishes good information and tours of the Kidd are a treat for children.

It does not take long once you enter the lower decks to understand why sailors nick named Destroyers Tin Cans. If you have a problem with small spaces this might not be for you. Probably the only thing worse would be a tour of a WW II era submarine. It is well worth the tour to get an appreciation for what the sailors have endured serving on smaller ships. Best time to be around the Kidd is on the 4th when they do the re-enactment attacks with old WW II fighters.Almost any old navy ship on exhibit is worth a visit if for no other reason than to pay tribute to our naval veterans.

The USA Kidd is a must see for those fascinated by war history. It is amazing to walk around the ship and see everything from the guns, navigation areas, nurse station, living quarters, etc. Clean and well kept.

On our second day in Baton Rouge, after eating a little hotel breakfast, we headed to downtown Baton Rouge. Our first stop was the Louisiana’s Old State Capitol which was described by Mark Twain as the "ugliest thing on the Mississippi." The literature further states that “this neogothic building, situated atop a bluff, contains a stained-glass dome, an impressive spiral staircase and a museum covering state politics.” We were up for this - only one problem - the place is closed for “cyclical maintenance” and would not be open until next Tuesday. Oh well.I took a walk around downtown for a while after which we drove a very short distance down River Street to the USS Kidd Veterans Museum. For a few dollars, I was able to do a self-guided tour of a naval destroyer. No, not a hula-hoop with a nail in it, a real live ship. The USS Kidd was launched February 28, 1943 and was used throughout WWII in the Pacific Theater. It was taken out of service in the early 1960s. Most of the 330 man crew was used to man the ship’s firepower. In addition to several five inch guns, a bunch of twenty and forty mm machine guns, it could launch depth charges and torpedoes. A group of volunteers work on the ship, keeping it in good condition for tourists. All but one or two of the volunteers are ex-Navy personnel - all were quite willing to stop and talk to you about the ship and their prior Navy service. One gentleman served in the early and mid-60s on one of the first ships that could launch Polaris missiles. He showed me quite a number of photographs from his time aboard the ship - including several of President John F. Kennedy who came on board to witness a missile launch - five days before he was killed. The tour was quite interesting; it was neat to walk through a piece of history. It was also noteworthy that there did not seem to be even the tiniest amount of wasted space anywhere on the ship.I think the admission cost to both the ship and the museum was only $7.50 (senior citizen rate).

The museum is terrific in itself but the KIDD adds a higher demension. The self guided tours are well mapped out and easy to follow. I'm a Navy vet and was stationed on a WWII era ship. This museum allowed me to give my son a look at shipboard life.

Good experience for folks to learn what military members did and how they lived to secure our freedoms!

We enjoyed our tour throughout the ship. The kids enjoyed climbing the stairs and being able to use a restroom on the actual ship... we loved it

I have been here multiple times over the course of 10 years. The KIDD is still a cool place, especially for kids. Sit in a gunners seat, go up and down the tiny vertical staircases. See sleeping quarters and other rooms. Very fun.

I really enjoyed the museum and the tour of this ship. Watch you head if you are tall (6'3"), as I bumped my head a few time on the hatches. It was really interesting, and I would highly recommend.
