Weirdly fascinating but hugely informative cemetery tour of New Orleans burial traditions. Like none other I've ever experienced!
This cemetery has a completely different vibe from St. Louis nos. 1 and 2; and Lafayette Cemeteries downtown. It is relatively more recent; and the folks buried there were very wealthy and very creative with their tombs. VERY interesting experience with one of the statues, too
Gave it 4 stars for it was difficult to find. This is a beautiful cemetery. My sister and I were introduced to this cemetery at the No market. R Broussard was selling photographs of angels he had taken at Metairie. He is an artist and his photography is beautiful! We were told the history of Metairie and also some of the angel stories. So much history. We realized we needed to see it. We were not disappointed!
A must see for anyone who has never been to an above ground cemetery - not to take away from the 3 Saint Louis catholic cemeteries also in New Orleans.Cool thing about this place is that prior to being used as a cemetery it was a horse racing track until the mid 1830's. Interesting history is that the man who started this cemetery had been refused membership into the jockey club and after making his fortune, bought the place and converted it into a cemetery in spite. Some great history including a confederate monument, a spike from a railroad, the tomb of the police chief from the 19th century as well as sculptures from Egypt design and the founder of Popeyes Chicken!
This is a great historical cemetery. It is well maintained and very different from the other NOLA cemeteries.
My husband and I went because we needed something to do after a cruise, but before an mid-afternoon airline reservation. Finding the main entrance was a bit difficult because of roads crisscrossing, but keep trying and follow your GPS. Once in the cemetery, follow the signs to the Office, and go in the north entrance (on the highway side). There is a little office with friendly, informative ladies, where you can get maps of the Cemetery. They had one of "Interesting People in the Cemetery"(they highlighted the "Weeping Angel" plot for us), plus they have 2 different CD driving tours...one for New Orleans important families, and one for Civil War people. You have to leave your driver's license so that they know they'll get the CDs back, but there is NO CHARGE. We only had time for one and did the Important Families tour. It took awhile to figure out how to work with the CD (turning it off and on to allow driving time to get to the spot), but you'll "get it" shortly. This tour will take you to most of the interesting architecture monuments. There are a few times you'll want to park and do a short walk, rather than drive. Bring your cameras!
Wonderful and historic, bring you camera. There are stories of people being mugged, so stick to the open areas and close to groups. Common sense will be all you need.
If you come down to the beautiful state of Louisiana, Metairie Cemetery is for sure one of the top free places to visit. My main reason for visiting Matairie Cemetery was to see the "Weeping Angel" and it was the most beautiful statue I have ever seen in my life. I was overwhelmed with emotion. She is pretty difficult to find, she is located near the entrance near the underpass. She is inside a beautiful tomb. Unfortunately, the tomb is locked but there are glass doors that allow you to have a great view of her. Besides the Weeping Angel, the entire cemetery is amazing.
We took the 3-hour Southern Style Tours tour and this was one of our stops. I know that the Lafayette #1 in the Garden District and the St. Louis cemeteries are very popular, but they took us to this one because they said it's more spacious. It had a great history, too. Some famous people interred here, along with some eccentrics. I don't know how easy it is to get here on your own, but if you're considering the Southern Style tours, it's definitely a high point.
We went ot this site while on a tour. It was very interesting once you know what the burial experience is. Walk around at a small pace and enjoy.
Let your imagination run free as you tour this historic cemetery. So much history. You can just feel the spirit energy floating around as you read the tombs.
Stopped by here on the way to drive over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. It is part of the overall feeling of the soul of the people and the way of life that is reflected in the attention to the glory of the final resting place.
A great look into the above ground necessity of crypts. Sometimes you get lucky and a New Orleans style funeral is in progress. Makes you realize what "Celebrate life" is all about. Seeing all the history in such a relatively small area is amazing.
We were here to help clean the family crypt of a relative. To have one open and see inside is a very cool experience. These above ground works of art for the departed is a necessity given New Orleans is below sea level. The fact that the folks make wonderful pieces of art to celebrate the life of their loved ones is special.
Was a bit tricky to find but once we got to the entrance we were able to wander around. They have some very beautiful statues here. We took photos and found it to be a good visit.
