Took the trolley towards Uptown and the group of restaurants we were aiming at. The ride takes you along St Charles and you pass by many large and elegant, period homes. We dismounted early and wandered gently past these fine buildings before heading towards dinner.
We gave ourselves a self guided tour by using our phones to learn some of the history of the homes. The houses were beautiful and so unique to the area. Also, walk through the cemetery for a cool experience, and then head down to Magazine St. for some small, local shops.
OMG it's beautiful! Since I'm in to architecture and old homes with front porches, I fell in love with this place. Take the St. Charles Streetcar and jump off at some point and just take a walk. It's a stroll you won't forget!
Get on the St. Charles Streetcar at Canal Street and just ride the entire way through the Garden District. The Neighborhood is so beautiful!
It was to touristy for me...The homes were historical and with impressive prices...The area was a typical...sorry been there done that.
Ornate, beautiful, safe! Took a walking tour and learned SO much (Matt with Magic Tours was terrific - knowledgeable and approachable, very good with questions, kudos!)
We took the St. Charles streetcar, which unfortunately was FREEZING the day we went (no heat in the cars, and the driver kept the front window open), so it was good to get out and walk around the neighborhood, including the cemetery there (which was in much better shape than St. Louis 1). Having already done the Grayline Katrina tour a few days beforehand, we were very aware of all of the raised houses and streets still in terrible conditions. Still, the houses, some of which even have gas lights on their porches, are beautiful.
We decided to do the walking tour of the Garden District, organized by Historic New Orleans Tours. Our guide, David's depth of knowledge was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed the 2 hours walking through this amazing area of NOLA. The tour included a walk though the Lafayette Cemetery and several blocks of the Garden District. Beautiful mansions steeped in history …. it was like taking a step back in time.
We stayed at a hotel in the garden district and loved it. The mansions there are stunning. The trolley line runs up and down St Charles Av and there are plenty of taxis so the are is convenient
We took the street car (St. Charles Street line) into the Garden District from the French Quarter. Stopped near the Lafayette Cemetery, walked around there for a bit, stopped by Sandra Bullock's house for a pic, and then headed to Magazine Street where we had a drink at The Bulldog. It was a great way to spend a beautiful afternoon in NOLA looking at the beautiful houses and strolling through the quiet neighborhood.
