We decided to take in the Norton on a Saturday trip to Shreveport because the weather was too dreary for any outside activities. This was our first trip to the museum and we really enjoyed the experience. The gallery is in a long arching building which features several galleries of different art. Most of the art is contemporary American, but there are some older pieces. Alos, there is a nice collection of fire arms and a kind of creepy doll collection. I also enjoyed the collection of propaganda posters. Overall the museum, while not being really outstanding, offers a nice diversion on a wet and dreary afternoon. While there are no pictures allowed, the docents are nice and don't hover over your shoulder as we've experienced in some museums.
Last time I tried ti visit the Norton was on the one day of the week it was closed, so this trip to Shreveport we made sure to visit. The gallery is designed in a subtle arc with different rooms housing the various exhibits. Upon entering you're greeted by a docent, who will explain the rules and layout of the galleries. Most of the artists are contemporary and American, but it is an interesting mix of paintings, sculpture, and artifacts. There is a large display of Remington and a nice firearms display. Overall this is a nice way to spend a few hours on a dreary day. One interesting aside, the museum has a working beehive in one of the sculpture gardens.
This is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon in Shreveport. While not huge, the museum offers an eclectic collection of art with a focus on American artists from a variety of eras. Even after reading all of the positive reviews on tripadvisor, I was surprised at how nice it was. The grounds are beautiful - even in February - when there's not a lot in bloom. The water features are just gorgeous.
We had read that this collection was worth seeing, but were delighted to discover its scope and beauty. Although it was too cold to walk on the grounds the day that we visited (Feb. 2015), the building, itself, was tasteful and so well suited to its purpose. The Gallery is located in a lovely residential neighborhood, yet close to the city (and food).Inside, the presentation of the artwork is stunning. Unlike some other museums and galleries, each piece is placed where it can be seen to its best advantage, without crowding. The variety is notable. We went through the entire building in about two hours, but could easily have spent far longer in each room. Informative signage explains the works, but does not interfere with the enjoyment of the art, itself. One area of particular interest to families may be the children's room where several over-sized book characters are on display. Check the website for details. This gallery was the highlight of our visit to Shreveport. We can't wait to get back so that we can see the outside property and take more time to enjoy the artwork.
I really didn't know what to expect when I visited the R. W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport, Louisiana recently. What I was delighted and thrilled to find that this museum has a permanent collection of over 8,000 works of fine art. and is quite extensive. I was particularly interested in their American Collection which contains outstanding examples from the Hudson River School and the major American "Western" artists, Frederic Remington and Charles Marion Russell. The museum has several of Remington's famous bronze sculptures including The Bronco Buster and Coming Through the Rye. Among his paintings at the museum are Coming to the Rodeo and Twilight of the Indian. And, in fact, it is considered that the Norton Art Gallery has one of the finest collections of Frederick Remington's works in America! As an ex-New Yorker, I was especially surprised to find that they had the Forever Marilyn Sculpture by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. which is based on the scene from her film, "The Seven Year Itch" where she stands over a NYC subway grate as the subway passes by so she could cool off on a hot summer day!I didn't have a chance to visit the the Gardens which is set among 43 beautifully landscaped acres. I plan on visiting again in the Spring when the azalea gardens should be in full bloom. The Norton Gardens also include several outdoor sculptures by the artists Sandy Scott, Kent Ullberg, A.A. Weinman, Gary Price, Bart Walter and Guiseppe Benelli. The R. W. The R.W. Norton Art Gallery and Museum in Shreveport, La. remains the top attraction in a city that offers so much for the visitor. The water walks and falls are complete now and there are so many of them, some hidden behind plants and demand attention with their bubbling sounds. The Winter plants are mysterious to our hometown garden ways in the South and are carefully tended and often contain a name tag for identify.Photos are not allowed in the outdoor garden walk area which seemed rather strange to me as memories to take home are part of the charm.Inside, it is too much to describe here. You must go and observe. Old Masters, American History and portraits, fabulous tapestries that most have never seen anything like before. Touring exhibits offer a look into the world of the world famous artists and art pieces. I am constantly delighted each time I go. I love the Norton and those that present it.
Looking for a place to visit over the holidays? Admission is free and the staff is excellent. Bring a little culture and education into your life. The children will love the historical displays and paintings. A true southern beauty and must see visit.
I can believe they don't charge for this. It was filled with eye candy! Oils, sculptures, prints, dolls, and guns... Beautiful landscape paintings. I actually felt hot in front of one painting of a temperature guage set at 102 degrees then a shade tree in the next pic to cool off under. Worth the trip. I promise who ever you are what ever the age
An interesting, unexpected museum with a variety of items to view: paintings, sculptures, old West, guns, dolls, native american art, tiny handpainted ceramic portraits. It's quite large and fascinating, plan for a couple of hours at least. Free parking, free entry. No gift shop. No photo's allowed, bummer. There are gardens, grounds, but we didn't have time for them.
This "gallery" is not worth the admission (which is free). While trying to appear as offering something of value, is nothing but a stuffy pretentious joke. Faux finishes to fakes copies and forgeries, I'm sure the only reason the don't let you take pictures is so real scholars and critics don't out them publicly. Thanks for the laugh.
Great facility with lots to appreciate. My wife and I are fans of art depicting scenes from the Old West, so were very pleased with the original paintings and sculptures by C.M. Russell and Frederick Remington, as well as Western landscapes by Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, and painters of equal and lesser notoriety. If you are not familiar with this type of art, visit anyway; I am sure you will find something of interest -- old firearms, perhaps, or dolls, or crystal, or tapestries. Be sure to set aside at least a full morning or afternoon to try to take everything in, if not an entire day; our tour guide gave us 90 minutes, and it was nowhere near long enough. The collection (advertised as having more than 400 paintings on display, as well as other attractions detailed by others in reviews below) is housed in a well-kept building surrounded by beautiful grounds. Very friendly and helpful staff.
My wife and I went here on a Thursday morning and essentially had the museum to ourselves. Firstly, it is entirely free! They don't even ask for donations or have a gift shop. Other than not being able to take photos anywhere inside or on the grounds, this museum is fantastic - truely! There is an excellent little bit of so many ages and genres of art for nearly everyone. There are wonderful examples of American oils, bronzes, crystal, dolls and firearms to satisfy. Do not miss the small table size displays of American miniature portraits of the Founding Fathers. Many depict them far more realistically than the famous ones I'd seen. It is almost like one is looking at photographs. The entire museum has wonderful quotes on the walls apropos to the art in the room. There are also small rooms of European and anchiant paintings, sculpture, tapestries, etc. there is even an atrium with whimsical statues for children. Outside the window in a well protected courtyard are three active bee hives (quite fun to watch.)The park-like grounds are beautiful. If you love art you should very highly consider visiting this jewel if you'll be in the area.
A wonderful gallery. artwork of all kinds. Wonderful collection of bronz, paintings, dolls, old firearms and ect. Also visiting exhibitions
I went on a trip to Shreveport and looked on TripAdvisor for things to do. The R. W. Norton Art Gallery got good ratings, so I put it in the GPS and got there easily. If you are interested in art and history, this is the place for you. The fact that it's free makes it even better. Each of the rooms had interesting things and historical information. The paintings were nice, the sculptures perfect and I could imagine them coming to life at night....like in the movie. Then I came upon a group of paintings that were magnificent. They touched my soul. I shared the paintings with another guest who was in another part of the museum. She followed me to the exibit and was also impressed with the beautiful landscapes. The next day, I took my husband. I wonder if you will react the same way, when your eyes gaze upon these works of art. Save time for a walk through their beautiful park. Thank you R. W. Norton Art Gallery. You were the highlight of my trip to Shreveport....the guards were nice too!
It was too hot to visit the garden but the Art Museum was huge, great and free. We got there at 3:30 and they close at 5. Had to rush a little to see everything but we really enjoyed it.
