The Princess has been restored to it's past glory! Beautiful neon signs and retro flooring and decor throughout! This was a big deal for my dad and his age in the 30's...the thing to do in Decatur...Go to the picture show! and we went to plenty of movies in the 60's such as the Sound of Music! A true, original movie and performance theatre. With the resurgence downtown, a splendid evening can be spent at a number of restaurants on 2nd Ave or even Simp's on nearby historic Bank Street. If there is an event which perks your interest, plan an great evening! We've seen lately Gone With The Wind played as a movie; Rick Bragg speak for a delightful evening; local theatre; Elvis impersonator evenings.....just whatever cranks your tractor. Must see and do if in town on an event evening!
This is an old movie theatre that has been converted into a performing venue. The place is small (about 700 seats) and intimate place. They have a professional series that features musical acts (folk, bluegrass, big band, etc. acts) plus a number of local activities. The place is attractive inside and you have a good view of the stage because of the small size. It is a local treasure and if you can get a ticket for an event, go for it. The professional series usually has about 4 to 5 shows a year during the winter months. Tickets are about $30 to 40 per show.My wife and I have seen lots of great performers, Ray Charles, Arlo Guthrie, The Capitol Steps, Daley and Vincent, Ricky Skaggs, etc.
I've attended many different performances at the Princess and must say it is a great venue for everything from music to drama. Looking forward to going back!
I had heard about the Princess Theatre for years before I ever had the opportunity to go to an event there. It is so neat. It will take you back to the days when theatre's were bright, shiney, fun, and magical. This is a great place to have high school senior portraits taken too.
We went to see a play and all the kids did a wonderful job. The theatre is very clen and comfortable.
Pretty neat old theater that's had extensive renovation over the years. Located in downtown Decatur it's a beautiful sight at night when all lit up. Have attended two concerts here in last couple of years and enjoyed. This place could be a crown jewel if they could get more acts to town and utilize it more. If you ever get the chance go check it out for yourself.
Plays, concerts, movies. The variety of offerings at the Princess is incredible. Whether you like blue grass, songwriter forums, country or cool jazz, they will have someone you'll fall in love with. I am not a huge Country fan but I adored the Secret Sisters. When you see the neon sign lit up, you know something great is happening at the Princess Theatre. Experience it for yourself.
This reworked theater is beautiful and has a great future. Many great shows have came across this stage!
Theatre: The show was "Henry Cho, The Funny But Clean Comedy Tour". If we could have heard 100 percent of the three acts presented, it would have been an outstanding show. We sat in the upper balcony and there didn't seem to be any speakers up there at all. It was uncomfortably hot in that section also. The ushers are all volunteers and did not help anyone find their seats, leaving me wondering why they were there. We saw ppl stumbling over each other and making frequent adjustments from seat to seat. Also in the balcony, every other row has a really wide seat on the aisle that I will definitely reserve if I ever go back there for another show.Show: We certainly appreciate the clean humor from Henry Cho. The show lasted over 90 minutes and included audience Q & A. Both warm up acts - did not hear their names - were also clean and funny.Concessions: Wine served in a dixie cup was $6.00. All concessions are cash only.
