I decided to stop at the Confederate Memorial Park on my drive from Pensacola Beach, FL back home to Edwardsville, IL, and was very glad I did. Much of the park is seen via the nature walk, which I didn't do, but what I did see was very interesting and respectful of the men and women who are buried there. The site was once a Confederate Soldier's Home, which would be like a VA hospital today. The museum, though small, was very interesting and educational. Very nominal fee to tour the museum, but free to view the park itself. If you're a civil war buff or just interested in historical sites, I would recommend visiting.
I visited the Confederate Memorial Park this last weekend with my Husband. It was an amazing afternoon! We visited the library and met Leonard Wilson, who is the librarian. He told so many great stories of times when the Confederat Soldiers Home and other buildings were on this property. e spent along time in the museum. I was amazed at the artifacts in the collection. The grounds are beautiful and a Sasanqua tree was in full bloom. The cemetarys were very interesting. I was amazed at the number of people who died in the month of February in the oldest cemetary. The Second cemetary, nearest the museum was on a hill side as if the soldiers and thier wives were still guarding the valley below. This was a great adventure and sparks my interest in learning more about the civil war and the confederate soldiers. I will post an article on my web site http://www.ithappensinalabama.com/blog
