We went for a wine tasting and walked away with a case of wine! So it goes without saying that we liked the wine! We also had fun doing the tasting. Our hostess was friendly, down to earth, and knowledgeable. It is well worth the drive!
My husband and I visited Whippoorwill prior to football season. We live close enough to have made the trip in less than an hour. When we got there we expected to tour the facilities and then a small wine tasting. There was no tour involved - sampling only. We did not have to pay for this. There were so many different types of wine. We ended up buying one - Confederate Rose. Once we got it home, we realized it was much too sweet. It seems the wines err on the side of very dry or very sweet with not much in between. It was a neat little outing for us on a Saturday afternoon, but I am glad we didn't drive over an hour for this visit. I really do enjoy being able to tour a place and see how the beverages are made - not just indulge.
We visited November 2012, everyone was very friendly. We did the wine tasting with the appetizers. Outside a pleasant surprise for the kids were the horses that came right up to the fence & allowed us to pet them & take pictures.
We went a little off the beaten path to find this place, but it was a great visit. It's small, but the family owned environment made it worth the time. They have muscadine and scuppernong wines, and they were very tasty. they took time with you and made sure you understood the wines. We bought 4 bottles and some souvenirs.
I am by no means a wine expert, but the wine in my opinion is very good. Also, visiting the vineyard is a very pleasant experience. The staff is very friendly and helpful, especially to a wine novice such as myself. I intend to visit them again as soon as I run out of the wine I bought during my last visit.
