From sculptures to paintings. From Europe, Asia, and the Native American. OF course, there were others. It was free but a donation is asked for. I would highly recommend it as I thoroughly enjoyed the Native American Exhibit showing the different kinds of art such as clothing and pottery from the different regions in the US. It includes a restaurant that closes at 2pm. There are also lockers to put your belongings in
Doesn't look like much from the outside but has great exhibits. Minimum suggestion donation is $3 and that is a bargain.Enjoyed it very much!
This museum's spacious galleries display a varied and well-curated collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture, decorative arts and photographs from the pre-Columbian to contemporary eras. Don't miss the Wedgwood collection and Albert Bierstadt's stunning, luminous Yosemite Valley landscape. There is no fee for admission, but a free-will donation is appreciated. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours to see highlights.
Visited on a rainy weekend to waste a couple of hours before our original destination. Ended up spending the whole day there. This museum has a diverse collection of art from several ages and cultures. It is nicely laid out so you won't be overwhelmed with the art displays. I loved the renaissance era displays and the Japanese section. They have a section called close to heaven that displays several southeastern Asian artifacts, which will take you so close to heaven. Kids loved it there and they asked to get back some other time. Good job Birmingham! Way to go!
Well organized selection. Very clean. Friendly staff. Has resturant and if you become a member you will also have free access to hundreds of other museums/exhibits in the southeast. Great if you are a traveler...which I am : )
This was the first place that I stopped when I came to BHam. They have an excellent collection at this museum covering the Renaissance, to African, to 16th century furniture. Loved this place and I plan on going back.
We travel a great deal and visit museums around the continent. This one had items on display we'd never seen before. I love that it's free too. A definite place to stop and spend a few hours.
My husband and I visited the museum due to a special exhibition on miniature paintings by Rembrandt, Hals, Vermeer and their contemporaries. While the exhibition was great, we were even more impressed by the collections of the museum itself--which are free to view!! There is a wonderful collection of Chinese and Buddhist art, an amazing collection of Wedgewood pottery, and some amazing finds, including a Monet and a John Singer Sargent portrait! Absolutely fantastic!
The BMA in Birmingham is a jewel that is little known outside the city. While the collections are small, but facility is beautiful and extremely well kept and exhibits are well designed. Highly recommended.
I took a "me day" to go to the museum. I had always wanted to see fine art. Staff was very friendly. I was very impressed with the variety and the layout of the galleries. Very educational experience.
Awesome experience! We took our 8 yr old twin boys to see the Japanese Lethal Beauty exhibit and loved it!! Fantastic! There are so many beautiful and thought provoking pieces along with historical exhibits and beautiful wedge wood pottery to see. Go check it out--it is FREE!!!
We just visited the Rembrandt exhibit, or Small Treasures Dutch Masters.. Wow! Major League museum .. Their wedgewood exhibit makes the one in London blush. This is a wonderful museum.. A special treat are the photos of Dr ML Kings struggle/impact in Birmingham in the 60s. Powerful! Go! Enjoy!
I live outside DC, the home of fabulous and free museums. Birmingham's art museum is a delight. Free parking on site and free entry are a steal for this lovely museum with an eclectic mix of modern, renaissance, European, and 'Bama art. A nice size, it is easily viewed in a single afternoon. Recommend!
We went over during our passing through Birmingham . We had only an hour which was unfortunate as u could easily spend 2-3 hours keeping kids busy and entertained. We only partially visited the kids section which was great with lots of hands on interesting activities . My kids loved it as did the adults ! Wish we had something like this back home.Admission is free but donations are encouraged .Wonderful experience and would difinitely visit again if ever back in the city .
We live close by so we go to the museum several times a year. You could easily spend half a day looking at their extensive collection. The museum is free. They only request donations which is really great as well for your pocket book.
