We spent about two hours walking all over what was left of the fort and the grounds. All of the original wooden buildings were gone except the light keepers cottage but we could not see it. They had a small museum that we went through and had the brick artillery storage areas and old battery's that we were able to walk through most of them. We walked down to the dock area and a bunch of Pelicans were sitting on old piers. A bunch of starfish were in the water by the old pier and some had washed up on the beach. They had several cannons still intact and situated in a few places.
Fantastic piece of history here. My family thoroughly enjoyed it. Be cautious if you take younger children, there are plenty of stairs to climb up but they are fairly steep. Otherwise, my kids loved running around in the empty rooms and seen the ocean views. I learned a lot at this site. The employees were very nice and helpful too. Its a bit of a drive to get to this site from Gulf Shores, but if you enjoy history it is definitely a must see.
We always visit any civil War sites we can find. This one was a little disappointing after seeing many others. They were in the process of restoration so you weren't able to go all around it. No park rangers or anyone to tell you much about the history they hand you a map and pretty much it. Small Museum is not good for kids as tons of glass ware in gift shop. It was worth the stop and glad we did it!
We went as a family. I always go to historical places when we go on vacation and this was my place. I thought it was pretty nice but thought a tour guide would have been nice. There is also limited signage telling the Fort's stories. My father-in-law enjoyed talking to a worker doing restoration work at the fort. If you go do some research and know a little bit about the fort and it will enhance your visit.
This is our second visit to the Fort. Several sections of the Fort were closed for construction during this visit, but it's still a neat place to walk through.
The fort grounds are fascinating. Unfortunately, we visited on a very cold and windy day which limited our visit. All aspects of the fort are interesting and illustrate the roll it played in protecting Mobile Bay during the civil war. I hope to return again in better weather.
It was very cold and windy the day we visited but it was still very interesting to walk the battlements and envision life back then at this fort.
plenty to see and discuss of historical value; school age children will enjoy specially if they're into history; good value; self-guided; friendly workers on the grounds and in the gift shop
Interesting fort with rich civil war history. Walk through the brick rooms under the wall and escaped out told the north. Then walked around the outside wall. Intriguing way to view the fort. Could image being a soldier in 1864 when the union captured it. Fort needs some repair but worth exploring. Steps are very steep to look out the top.
this was a cool Site, with a lot of history to take in. lots to see and most is walking. some of the grounds are rundown and under repair. cool to see where the battle took place
If you are history buff, this a must see while you are in the area. Make sure you walk through the old fort and go to the top and lookout over the bay at the lighthouse and also visit the museum.
This site it just phenomenal! The history is amazing and the work of our troops so impressive. This is a wonderful day trip and is so educational. The museum has very poor lighting and some of the light bulbs in the building were burnt out. The restrooms are VERY clean! Such a great place!!!
We spent about 4 hours walking and seeing some of the historic areas of this site. We really enjoyed. A fair amount of walking but all well worth the time and expense.
My large (44 people) got a ranger-guided tour, which made all the difference in visiting this historic site. If I had come alone or with a small group, I would have spent far less time here. The site is historically significant to the naval battle of Mobile Bay, but is undergoing much-needed restoration. There is signage explaining the French "star" architecture of the site, the architect, and some of the history. The fort is/was masonry with earthen sides outside the moat. You may climb to the top of the inner walls and walk around the top section. However, the steps are very steep, about 16"-18" tall, and have no handrails. Views of the bay are spectacular. The fort is open 8:00 - 5:00 daily. The museum explains more of the history of the site, and has a number of artifacts, but is very dark. A short audio-visual presentation would add a lot to the visit. There is also a gift shop. Open 9:00-4:30 daily. The restrooms are in a separate outbuilding. There is a small fee ($7.00 adults, $5.00 seniors). It is free to active military, veterans, and children under 6.Since this is an exposed point, it is very windy, and can be quite cold in the winter months. I recommend some sort of ear protection at all times, especially if you are prone to earaches. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to climb the steps. Hiking boots/shoes would be ideal, but any non-skid shoes are o.k. No sandals or heels, though.
Having seen Ft Pickens this site was a little disappointing. But restoration work was underway while we were there. A brochure is provided, but I suggest a little pre-visit research in order to appreciate the full story of this important historical site. Enjoyed the drive to the site and the ferry ride to Ft Gaines to the west.
