This was a very interesting museum and offered a great view into the history of medicine and medical procedure. Our hostess was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We enjoyed the tour and were happy we decided not to explore alone.
I highly recommend the Mobile Medical Museum. My wife and I really enjoyed it. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour really enjoyable. If you are in Mobile you need to make a reservation to see this.
The museum was small but crammed with displays. We saw old things and some newer things. It would be interesting if there could be the newest thing shown next to the oldest thing (like the stethoscopes did). It always amazes me how far we have come in the medical field, yet still have so much we don't know. You have to call to make an appointment for the tour but it's worth an hour of your time. The museum is next door to the Mobile Women's & Children's Hospital which as wonderful sculptures dotting their landscape.
Really enjoyed all the interesting artifacts and was very cool to get a personal tour. They are normally open Tues - Friday I believe so those would be the best days to plan to see the place and you do need to call and make an appointment. Unfortunately we were only available on the weekend but Amanda came in anyway and gave us a Sunday morning tour which we really appreciated, it was well worth the visit. At the end we each received a complimentary postcard which was a nice souvenir.Go visit the museum, you won't be sorry!
Had a wonderful tour today. Really learned a lot of information; some shocking, some icky, all interesting. Walking through the museum, you really gain an appreciating for how far medicine had advanced. Looking at the exhibits really puts you in a frame of mind of what it must have felt like to be a patient 300 or 200 or even a mere 50 years ago. Thoroughly enjoyable, very educational.
The only real drawback to seeing this museum is that you have to make a reservation for a specific time, but if you can deal with that you'll be rewarded with an approximately hour-long tour of this small but really cool medical museum. You must initially be accompanied by the tour guide, but after the tour you are free to go back through again on your own (although that might have been offered to me because they weren't busy at the time?). The tour guide is friendly and very knowledgeable, which really adds to the experience. You get the feeling that she really loves doing this.Photography is not allowed. That's too bad, because there are so many neat and even one-of-a-kind items that are very picture-worthy.You'll see x-ray tubes, large paper mache anatomical models, an iron lung, the first artificial heart valve, a cool collection of old spectacles, dental and optical equipment, items from witch doctors, and a lot more. Tip: Ask to see the really old autopsy photo in the first room; a little unnerving, but unique, and it's easy to miss. The cost as of August 2012 was about $5 per person. Definitely worth it, and worth an hour of your time. Would highly recommend this place!
