The Mobile Bay Bears play here and put on a great show. Mike C is one heck of a staff leader and treated us well. Concessions are reasonable and parking is plenty. Have a blast!
Great way to spend the afternoon enjoying America's favorite past time. Can't wait to go back for another season.
Great display. I've seen something like this before in Jacksonville, Fl., The lights/colors sincing to the radio station was great. Some people were just driving thru like going thru a school zone w/out enjoying the scenery. At the end is where they try to get you, paying for rides. They need to sell hot chocolate and have something more in the way of food, biscotti, peppermint hot choc. or anything, popcorn/cotton candy. In Jax., they even had an ice skating rink. Definitely worth the ride from Pensacola. It was beautiful, for a first year. The roads to the Hank are dark, not well marked and there are detours. The drive thru was a bit too dark in some places, be careful and the way out was not marked well. Children especially would love this attraction. $6.00 per person. Go......
On November 29, I took my siblings and their teen children to the First Annual Night of Lights at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Alabama. Oh what a treat! When we drove up we didn't know what to expect because we saw few vehicles and the area was dark. However, around 5:30, we started moving up to pay, which $6.00 a person was not bad at all, and as we got to the entrance you had to put your radio on 97.9 to get the Christmas music going through your radio. Driving forward you had white lighted arrows directing you towards the area where thousands of lights were twinkling with the decorations of Christmas. You don't even have to get out your vehicle so this is a great treat for grandma and granddad or anyone who is mobility limited. It takes about 45 minutes to drive though. The holiday music was great and don't be surprised if everyone in your vehicle start singing, that's after they get through with the awe and ohh. After driving through a few minutes, a stream of vehicles were behind each other. After getting to the end of the drive you can visit the Santa Village, where you can see the various pets, bungy jumping, train ride, taking pictures, a slide and so much more. This was really a treat for all of us and my brother can't wait until he gets back to work to let the guys know what a good time he had with his family over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Yes. it is a baseball stadium, but, there are other venues in the off season, even in the parking lot. Car shows, RV shows, there is always something going on. Fireworks at a Bay Bears game is worth the price of admission.
"The Hank" as locals know it was opened in 1997. The ball park was a gem in its early days and the team led the entire minor leagues in attendance the first few seasons and the team won championships. Over time, the park has fallen on hard times as the management has failed to market well and the concessions have been allowed to fall in quality. The ball park is located very conveniently, near the intersection of Government Street and Interstate 65 and easily accessible from all directions. There is more than ample parking and tickets are affordable, especially for seniors and members of the military, who receive a $2 discount off all seats. The most expensive seat in the park is just $9 and other seats can be had for much less. The product on the field remains outstanding. This was the fifth consecutive year in which they have qualified for the Southern League Playoffs, and although they lost in the first round, only four of ten teams make the playoffs, so it is still quite an accomplishment. The team won the title in three of the past five seasons and this year’s team saw six players who began the season in Mobile in the regular lineup of the Arizona Diamondbacks by mid-August. Three of the top twenty prospects in all of minor league baseball pitched for the BayBears this season and another of their pitchers was called up to Arizona in May and was part of the Diamondbacks’ rotation all season. A lot of money has been spent in recent years to bring certain aspects of the facility up to current standards; the lighting and the home team clubhouse have both seen major renovations and the visitor clubhouse still needs similar work. The dugouts need attention and the seating area for fans definitely could use a major upgrade as could the press box. Concessions are going to be upgraded before next season with more variety and better service. The new General Manager is going to make every effort to get a radio contract revived to expand the team’s footprint and visibility in the community. I am hopeful that the construction of the new shopping center nearby that will bring a Costco, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Hobby Lobby and several other large stores to the neighborhood will increase traffic to the area and cause more people to realize how convenient getting to and from the park is. The new GM also is considering different starting times to attract more office workers by beginning the weeknight games earlier so people can go straight from work to the games without needing to kill several hours in between. Money is tight in the city’s budget and I do not see that changing anytime soon as city government is dominated by arch-conservatives who do not believe in public services of any kind if taxes are required to pay for them. The fund which supports the ballpark is shared with the Ladd-Peoples Stadium football facility and some on city council envision returning Ladd to its former heyday when it frequently hosted rock concerts and other things besides football games. It is highly unlikely that Mobile will get a new stadium on a par with the beautiful new facilities in Birmingham, Pensacola and soon, Biloxi. With Huntsville losing its franchise next season to Biloxi, Mobile will have the oldest park in the Southern League and the lowest average attendance. Those magnificent facilities can draw crowds just to see the facility, even though (at least in the case of Birmingham and Pensacola), the team on the field is not worth coming to see. As others have pointed out, if you visit the stadium, visit the best part ... the Hank Aaron Childhood Home and Museum that is on the ball field grounds. Mobile native Hank Aaron’s childhood home was moved to this location and filled with many relics! For those not from this area, Mobile ranks third in the number of native son players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown; Hank Aaron, Willie McCovey, Ozzie Smith, Billy Williams and Leroy ‘Satchel’ Paige all were born and all but Smith raised here in Mobile. Only two other cities (Chicago and New York) have more, with six each. Yet those are cities of many millions of people; Mobile has never had a population of much more than 200,000.
Convenient, fan friendly stadium. You don't have a bad seat in the house. Worth the trip to see a ball game!!
We stopped here on our way through Mobile. There was not a game going in but they unlocked Hank Aaron's museum (childhood home). It was s really cool experience and interesting information. Definitely glad we took the time to stop.
The Baybears are one of the best minor league teams in the country (and have been for years) but Hank Aaron Stadium is way past it's prime. The seating in most spots is raised so you're off the field. It's just not a user friendly park (concessions are downstairs away from the action, concessions are boring and food is sub-par, attendance is terrible which leads to boring atmosphere and there's nothing to see or do before the games)Mobile should follow Pensacola, Montgomery and Birmingham's lead and build a new stadium downtown.
Since I was on business in Pensacola from California, I thought I would make the hour drive to take in a ballgame in Mobile. The staff treated me very nice since I arrived 2 hours early. Then the rain came and the ballgame was postponed. While they knew I would never be back all they offered me was a rain check. I am very disappointed how matter of fact everyone was from then on since they now had my money. The Bay Bears should re-consider this practice. It's very unfair.
I love baseball, and the baybears represent what baseball should be. The team is always good, the stadium has a classic look, Hank Aaron's house is beside the park. No one ever goes to these games and it's a shame really. I have been to tons of parks and this is high on the list, great place to visit.
We happened upon a Groupon when planning our vacation and are so glad we did. Hank Aaron Stadium is a great park, the staff was very friendly, and the museum was great. We especially loved that it was in his childhood home.
Enjoyed a friday night game. This AA club of the Diamondbacks has some good talent that I'll be waiting to see in the big leagues. the facility is very nice, lots of food choices and the staff works their butts off to make sure everyone has a good time. If you're in the area, check them out.
If you visit the stadium, please visit the best part ... The Hank Aaron Museum that is on the ballfield grounds. It was his childhood home that was moved to the location and filled with many relics! I am not even a baseball fan, but did enjoy the self guided tour.
We enjoyed a trip to the ballpark to see the local minor league team, the Mobile Bay Bears, play the Montgomery Biscuits. It was a great game with a nice family crowd. The ball field and stadium area is clean and quite convenient. Nice entertainment!
