We arrived late afternoon and played 9 holes of the short course. best short course we have ever played, a miniature version of their full length courses with incredible design features. We then drove the back nine and it was equally good. This is a great place to loosen up the swing before going onto the main courses. We then played the falls course and enjoyed every hole. We played well with careful course management and were rewarded with good scores. Another group of "good golfers" attacked the course and it ate them up!Classic layout renovated to high standards and the green so fast, smooth and consistent that we took the time to figure out the contours and were rewarded with some wonderful challenges. Look forward to doing the crossings next time.
Quality of golf is excellent, courses are challenging, and well maintained. Excellent value. Typical of Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Trail
I had lunch at the clubhouse last week. I ordered chilli and a grilled cheese. It was a rainy day and that fit the bill perfectly. The chilli was excellent and the grilled cheese very good. The staff was very friendly and the room beautiful, warm and inviting. I will be back!
Another Robert Trent Jones trail golf course has been conquered. This was a nice course, played pretty quick. Service at the club house was super helpful and very attentive. Course was not crowded, tee'd off on time for the first 18 and early for the second 18. Keep up the good work in Alabama!
Magnlia Grove is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. I believe the greens here are the best in the city. While the Crossings course gets the most attention due to hosting the annual LPGA event, I believe the Falls is actually a more challenging course. And the Short course (par 3) is rated by GOLF magazine as the finest par three course in the United States. Everything about playing here is first class. When you arrive, you stop at the bag drop where young men hustle to grab your bags and shoes out of your trunk and place them on carts. You park and walk to the clubhouse to pay and find a very nice pro shop, bar and grill. There are men's and women's locker rooms downstairs. The facility also offers meeting rooms and conference rooms in the clubhouse for corporate or golf club meetings. Rates vary widely depending on residence, whether or not you have a Trail Card and military status. If possible, I highly recommend going on-line and making a tee time reservation and getting a tee time as close as possible to when Twilight rates begin, usually at 2:00 PM. The rate after twilight is about half the full rate and on weekdays when the course is not crowded, they will generally allow you to tee off as soon as you arrive, without waiting around until 2:00. I generally arrive about an hour before my scheduled tee time, go to the range to get loose, then hit the putting green. Do NOT attempt to play this course without hitting a number of putts on the practice green! These greens are lightning fast, almost U.S. Open speed and trying to play without getting accustomed to the speed will be hazardous to your score. The fairways are generally plenty wide and not difficult to hit. The problems on these courses are with fairway and greenside bunkers and water. There are no 'tricked' out holes where local knowledge is required to score. But all parts of your game will be tested. Do not let your ego prevent you from playing the Par Three course here. This is no throw away tract for high handicappers or rank amateurs. The Par Three course is a real golf course, with severely undulating greens and deep bunkers... it just happens to consist of eighteen shorter holes. But many of the holes on the short course are more difficult than the Par Three holes on the two full size courses. The real beauty of the short course is time. You can have a great golf experience in a gorgeous setting in about two hours and fifteen minutes. And even better... it is just $28!
The course is fantastic! The greens are lightening fast and in great shape. Unfortunately, it started pouring so we didn't finish the round, but we will be back!
I have always known how good the long courses are at RTJ, but was surprised by how good the short course is. Play the back tees and it is all you want to handle. Nice to play a round in about 2 hours also!
this is a great place to play. 36 holes and all are wonderful. beautiful layout, very good staff and comfortable clubhouse. highly recommend
Magnolia Grove has all the amenities of a private course for the public. It's reason for my 1st trip to Alabama and will guarantee my return! Looking forward to watching LPGA tour play same "Crossings" course as I with hopefully better results. Courses are definitely user friendly. Don't miss if you're any where near Mobile or are looking for a worthwhile road trip as we did from Georgia!!
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is one of the best golfing options in the South. There are two courses here: the Falls is the tougher but the Crossings is also a challenge. Service is good, the course is well maintained. Tee times are required although you can expect a round under 4.5 hours
Played 3 rounds on a RTJ golf vacation. The courses are in very good shape and are fun to play. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is laid back. This is the second time we have played courses on the 'trail' and we will certainly be back.
Played the short course and truly enjoyed it. Don't be fooled, short doesn't mean easy by any means. The short course has teeth and they show. Forced carries and some narrow holes. Undulating greens. And just about every hole could be a signature hole somewhere. This was our first golf experience on the RTJ Trail, and in fact our first time golfing in Alabama. Now we're itching to try the rest of the trail!
This is a great course. The scenery is beautiful. The greens are true and the fairways have been in great shape every time I've played here. I have played both courses, The Falls and the Crossings but have yet to play the Par 3 course. Later this week I'll tackle that. Having played the majority of Robert Trent Jones courses along the golf trail I really enjoy Magnolia Grove. Once you play it you will see why the LPGA hosts a tournament here. This is the best course in the area without a doubt.
This is a beautiful golf course with excellent staff. It was in PGA shape. Will definitely go back and enjoy it again. Little bit pricey but worth it.
We were spurred on to try this course by the reviews we had seen. When we arrived, we were greeted by preparation for an LPGA event in 8 days. We had never played a course so close to a tournament date, so were excited to see what the pros play. The fairways had very few divot holes and the greens rolled true. I suppose that they would get faster closer to the tournament date. This Robert Trent Jones design is playable and challenging.
