If you love hammers or tools, this is a no-brainer. But, really, how many people LOVE hammers? Clearly the docents of the Hammer Museum do, as evidenced by their massive collection of all types of hammers throughout history. Even if you're not a hammer junkie, as I am not, it's still an interesting place to visit for thirty or forty minutes. There's not a ton of info, but I suppose if you're on a group tour or something you'll get more info. Still fun to see.
Hammers hammers hammers. This museum is an absolute must see in Haines AK. Every kind of hammer you can imagine and then some. It is a small museum but packed to the rafters with fascinating hammers. Buy the ticket that includes the Eagle Preserve and the Sheldon Museum across the street. Great things to do on a rainy day (which is almost every day) in Haines!
Really enjoyed this stop on our Off the Beaten Path tour that we took in Haines, AK while stopping there on a cruise. Our tour guide knew the owner of the museum who had a hammer collection that outgrew his home. Mike, the owner, was there and he gave us an interesting demo of a hammer "machine" that he had out front. He has a fun museum and the $5 admission seems a fair price. We saw all types of hammers, more kinds than I ever knew existed. It is a fun spot and very tongue in cheek displays. They have a moose outside made of hammers that they name every year in a contest.
What great little museum if you have any interest in tools. With over 2000 hammers on display, you will surely find one that you must have for your tool box. For some reason my wife wasn't that excited about it.
An amazing display of hammers of all varieties. Even a couple of creations made of you guessed it hammer. Friendly curator.
A real gem, one of those unique museums that you would never know was there. Recommended by both a bus driver in Anchorage and the local Haines tour guide, $5 admission was a bargain.
Well, no false advertising here...it's a collection of hammers. It struck us as someone's personal collection striving to be historically significant. Without the staff to tell stories about the collection, the museum would not really stand as a museum--rather more of a collection of hammers. We stayed about 15 minutes before a cruise ship group came in and dominated the entire space!
You don't have to love hammers to go here, but in interest in tools is helpful. They have all sorts if hammers that were used in many different ways from home to beauty and more.
Nothing like sharing an obsession with the world, especially when it is so well done. Who imagined that there were so many different hammers? They are beautifully displayed and explained. Kids will love this place as much as you will. It's just a couple of rooms, but it is worth 45 minutes or so. Great docents too.
Look at it this way. Anyone who is nuts about hammers enough to amass a collection of hammers you know and have not heard of deserves the attention of the visitor to Haines. Heck, it is right downtown and you have no idea how little you really know about the kinds of hammers there are in this world until you visit this place. Besides, it is right across from a great regional museum and just up the street from some good places to eat. Try it.
There is a story to tell here and you need to meet the owner to get the whole tale. This is one of the most unique and unusual museums you will ever see. The admission is minimal and the historical value is fascinating. Hammers...more than you can imagine. Well worth the time and effort to stop in this little community in Alaska.
So many different types of hammers to see and would be great for any handyman to see all of the different types of hammers available. Love the story about the owner rescuing a dog.
Who would think you could make a whole museum with just hammers but the folks in Haines managed to do just that. Very interesting. Highly recommend a visit.
there are so many hammers in this small museum. Some of the hammers have a little story attached about the history of their use. Great to visit
If you like unique and out of the ordinary places, then this place is for you.It was interesting enough to walk through and can be checked off the list of "done that".
