It sounds like a cliche, but our 7 day Alaska tour was just that. This is the tour for those who want to get to know Alaska's people, geography, history and wildlife in the intimacy of a small group. My husband and I feel so fortunate to have found this tour company. Our guide, Patrick, was a wealth of information, assured that everyone's needs were met and filled every day with many fantastic experiences. His passion for sharing this land and all it has to offer, made the trip all the more enjoyable. As other reviewers have mentioned, this tour is off the beaten path and accomodations and eating establishments are all local, not national chains that are the same everywhere you go. We have so many great memories of this trip that we will cherish forever. If you want to experience the real Alaska, we highly recommend this trip.
We had the great fortune to travel to Alaska this summer as part of a special family reunion. There were 20 of us, including 10 grandchildren ranging from 7 years through college aged. We are still dreaming about and cherishing the many memories of our travels that were led by our stalwart tour guides,Todd and Patrick, from Adventures Alaska. We had 5 days to visit this incredible state and wow did we cover a lot of ground (and sea). Each day was filled to the brim (thought not overfull to the point of exhaustion!). A favorite day was being exposed to the wilderness of Denali National Park through the "Kantishna Experience" - a 12 hour expedition literally to "the end of the road" that leads into the Park. Another amazing experiencing was viewing the groaning glacier in the Kenai Fjord, similarly primordial and moving a place as Denali. Todd and Patrick were such lovely company - so warm and full of interesting facts and stories about the history of the place - it felt like they were part of our family by the end of the trip. Alaska is not about luxury but about being in a place to luxuriate in the magnificence of Nature - so our basic accommodations and hearty meals were just right, especially the many opportunities for excellent Alaskan craft beer along the way! If you are looking for a down-to-earth travel experience, with people who are in the travel business to share their love for the places they take you, then this is the tour group for you.
“It’s a moose”. A memorable line from our first night on the Alaska and Yukon Explorer tour offered by Adventure Alaska Tours. My wife and I would recommend the tour group to those travelers interested in getting off the beaten path and seeing the ‘real’ Alaska. We stayed and ate at local establishments that were well known by our guide who we had to ourselves for the first 2 days before meeting up with another couple for the remainder of the trip. This wasn’t a fast paced, get in as many sights as you can trip. It was well paced with enough down time combined with a local perspective on things. We even enjoyed a campfire with the neighbors during our stay beside the Yukon River. This was our first trip to Alaska and we are looking forward to trying their Iditarod tour.
My husband and I had an incredible opportunity this summer to see the "real" Alaska by touring with a small group from Adventure Alaska Tours. We learned so much during this trip. The guide was very experienced and he set the pace of our day-by-day adventures to suit our group perfectly. We would definitely recommend this tour company to friends and family.
My husband, brother-in-law and I did this trip in late June. We traveled with Patrick, our guide, and had a fantastic time! There was a little bit of everything on this 6 day tour of the Kenai Peninsula (cruise of Fiords National Park, cruise out of Homer to Seldovia, and flight from Seldovia to Homer along with lots of miles in the van), and Patrick knew a lot of cool places to stop for views or museums. The absolute highlight was listening to Hobo Jim (Alaska's Balladeer) in the van on the way to Homer, and then having Patrick tell us that he was playing at the restaurant across the street from our hotel that night. It was just chance, but made it so special. We were very lucky on this tour because it turned out we were the only ones who signed up for this time. So we had the van to ourselves, and were able to do more of what we wanted. Patrick was so great - very knowledgeable about all aspects of Alaska, super nice person, easy to talk to, and so accommodating for all of our needs/wants. We really appreciated it. As others have said, the lodgings are not fancy (except the Fiords National Park lodge), but they were all quite adequate. The food was also not fancy, but quite good. We enjoyed being off the beaten path and meeting real Alaskans. We spent two nights at Barb and Todd's lodge in Hope too. Great cabin with a lovely stream right outside. So peaceful for sleeping. Their hospitality was wonderful even though Barb was laid up with a nasty break in her leg. We loved doing gold panning in Hope too! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves adventure! You will be well taken care of, learn a lot about Alaska, and have a great time!
My extended family of 20 - ranging in age from 7 to 76 - spent 5 days in Alaska with Todd and Patrick. We had a wonderful adventure covering 1000 miles in 2 vans. From Anchorage to Seward to Denali and back, our guides were knowledgeable - and patient with the many varying demands of our group. While our accommodations and meals were not fancy by any means, they were certainly adequate. Todd and Patrick were excellent ambassadors for the Last Frontier.
Our Alaska Adventure was in September 2012, the last tour of the season. We took the All Alaska Interior and Coastal Tour and really had a great trip. Weather that time of year can be "iffy" and some attractions were closing for the season/weather. But we approached this tour with a sense of adventure and I can honestly say that both my husband and I had a wonderful time. Our tour guide was Patrick, who is interesting, knowledgeable, great to work with, took good care of us, and the French accent doesn't hurt either... We had 9 people, plus Patrick, in a 12-passenger van. With all our luggage and supplies, I will admit it was VERY crowded. Some of us, as you can tell from the photos, were not small people and it would honestly have worked better to have one less person in the van. Because Alaska is a VERY LARGE place, everything is far apart, and you spent a great deal of time riding in a crowded van. But we were all good sports and it worked out well. This is definitely the tour I would recommend if you want to see more of the "real" Alaska and not just go to touristy places with the cruise ship crowd. But I will warn you. You're not in a cushy tour bus, and ther are no 4-star hotels. The places we stayed varied from plain and clean, to lovely, to really kind of icky. (The icky one was a last minute substitution due to an unexpected cancellation. But it was one of the most fun nights on the trip, we saw some real Alaska, met some real people, and I honestly wouldn't trade the experience. We came back with lots of stories from our night at Meier's Lake. Look at the attached photo to see our room.)The best part of the tour was also unplanned. Due to a last minute schedule change on the ferry, we ended up going to Matanuska Glacier for a half-day glacier hike. That was absolutely the most fun I ever had - walking on an actual glacier - and I would recommend that they try to include this in all their tours. We all had an amazing day.The folks that own Adventure Alaska - Barb and Todd - are lovely people, and they did everything they could to make this a great trip for everybody. Want more info? Don't hesitate to email me for details. I also have about 1000 more pictures....
Our trip was on the All Alaska Interior and Coastal 9-day tour in July 2013 and this trip was AMAZING! Hands down Alaska is the most beautiful and scenic state we have in the USA! If you are looking for a smaller tour group size, this is the company to use (average size is 8-10). It was so much more personalized and we were able to go places that larger companies/tours can not and do not. It was great to see places "off the beaten path" and to experience the "real Alaska"! Our tour guide Patrick was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make this trip so enjoyable. Just when you think you've seen the most beautiful place, there is always one more that he finds! Denali park tour, flightseeing of Denali, Kenai Fjords boat tour, glacier hikes, wildlife and stunning scenery were wonderful on this trip. Thanks go to Barb and Todd (tour company owners) who were very gracious hosts and made you feel welcome and part of the family at all times. To the one person who gave them a bad review of their Iditarod trip i challenge them to take this trip and see if you give them the same review. You will NOT be disappointed on this one!
We recently went on the All Alaska Interior and Coastal 7-day Tour in July/August 2013. Our extended family group of 10, ranging in age from 9 to 70, were treated to the trip of a lifetime. We were expertly led by our knowledgeable guide Patrick, who went above and beyond to make sure our trip was one of a kind. Our favorite memories are of the special, off the beaten path places he took us and the stories that accompanied them. Highlights included watching Humpback Whales in Kenai Fjords National Park, glacier hikes, Denali flight-seeing (optional, but recommended), the wildlife and breathtaking landscapes at every turn. Accommodations were comfortable and clean. The all-inclusive aspect allowed for a more enjoyable trip knowing that all food, lodging, boat tours/ ferry ride, etc. were taken care of. Owners Todd and Barb were the most gracious hosts who patiently and promptly answered all of our questions leading up to our trip. We wanted to see the real Alaska with a unique and personal touch from a small group tour company and we were not disappointed.
I did the All Alaska Interior and Coastal tour in June/July 2013 and absolutely loved every minute of it! It was so much better being in a small group that allowed you so much more flexibility rather than being herded around in a large tour group. Our guide, Patrick, was a fountain of knowledge on the history of the places we visited and people of Alaska, as well as having a few funny stories of his own to tell. The owners, Barb & Todd were very helpful. Even arranging for my accommodation in Anchorage before and after the tour. They were the perfect hosts when we stayed at their cabins in Hope. After 5 minutes you feel like part of the Hope family. I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants to experience the Alaskan wilderness and wildlife and have a great time doing it. I'll be booking another tour.
This is a unique tour company that shows you the real Alaska. Tour size is very limited, usually 8-10 people traveling by 15 passenger van. This allows for a great deal of flexibility for the group. The restaurants and lodging are the ones frequented by local residents, which is great! You are not herded with large groups of cruise ship guests to "tourist trap" vendors. This year I took the Kenai Explorer tour at the end of July. I took a longer tour last year and enjoyed it so much, that I booked the tour this year to see the coastal areas. Transportation included boats and a short air taxi ride in addition to the van. I like the all-expenses included feature. Once the tour guide picks you up, you have no worries about paying for food, lodging or venues. I traveled alone and this is a perfect tour company to use if you don't have someone to travel with. It is not only safe, but fun because the other tour members become your travel companions.Todd and Barbara (the company owners) were our tour guides on this trip. As long term Alaska residents, they have a wealth of knowledge about the areas on the tour. No matter how many emails or phone calls I made to get questions answered, Barb and Todd were patient and helpful. I highly recommend this tour company. Their tour descriptions on their website are very detailed and accurate. If you want a unique experience that is not "cookie cutter" , this is the tour company to use.
we used a variety a travel mediums--van, small plane, boat--and feel we saw a lot more of Alaska than we could have had on a sight-seeing tour alone. The guides were always helpful and accommodating. we went with a group of friends, and they were very flexible in tailoring the trip to our requests.
I write as the director and a principal of Adventure Alaska, in response to the posted commentary by Larry M. concerning our 2010 Iditarod trip. We are a very small company, and having directly led a portion of the trip, I have full knowledge of the client’s experience. There was indeed a problem with a supplier of a critical component of the trip, particularly in regards to our lodgings, originally scheduled for two nights. As this was not apparent until the trip was well underway, one night was necessarily spent in cramped and less than ideal quarters, at odds with our previous experience working with these folks for more than ten years. Due to this situation (and an approaching winter storm), that portion of the trip was altered en route to eliminate the second night under those circumstances. Despite our sincere apologies, and demonstrated efforts to make immediate adjustments, as well as the action of severing our relation with the supplier, the client apparently was not able to be satisfied. Having been in this business for twenty years and operating this specific itinerary for 17, we must place this client’s commentary in that perspective of experience. Several of his negative observations were in fact concerning aspects of the trip that were carefully explained in printed and oral form before his trip. While every traveler has their own unique expectations and past experiences, we can only interpret the nature and substance of his comments in light of the vast numbers of past clients that leave supremely satisfied. Much of our business is based on word of mouth, with many repeat customers. We are very proud of our family business and make a great personal effort to ensure that each of our client’s experience is the one they hoped for. Unfortunately when dealing with the public, with each individual bringing their subjective expectations, 100% satisfaction among clients will never be attainable. We remain comforted by and proud of the fact, that only a tiny percentage will be among those unable to be satisfied, despite our best efforts. Should you be considering traveling with us, we hope that you will discuss your travel goals with us beforehand, as we would rather steer someone toward a competitor rather than have them take a trip not fully in keeping with their desires. If you would like a perspective other than ours, we would be delighted to provide oodles of references from the thousands that have traveled with us previously. They have and continue to make this challenging means of making a livelihood, emotionally supremely satisfying. Thank you for your consideration.
