The peace and serenity of the Shrine strike you as soon as you exit your vehicle...walking down the path toward the beach, breathing in the fresh air...Glorious even if you're not a religious person
The Shrine is a beautiful chapel situated in a rustic setting on the Lynn Canal. There are pathways to the beaches and wildlife viewing is very good. It is a short ride from downtown Juneau but well worth the ride.
The Shrine of St. Theresa is a beautiful Catholic church that combines the tranquility of nature with a moving sense of spirituality. The shrine is situated on the channel coast and is surrounded by a patch of woods and a stretch of beach. Stations of the cross are set up to follow a trail in the woods that surrounds the shrine. Wildlife is abundant, and on most days one will see eagles, seals, and, at the right time of the year, whales. If possible, choose a sunny day to get the best views of the scenery.
A nice little out of the way peaceful shrine/church in the woods. Just a short walk to get there. We were on a cruise excursion and this was one of the "off the beaten path" stops. It was a pretty little church inside and had a nice view being right by the water. It was nice to see something completely different. We were glad to have a chance to visit here.
It took a while, but I found the cat! We sat near the water on the grounds where the caretaker lives and she (or he) let me pet him (or her) for a good long time. The shrine itself is on a little island and is creepy in a forest-y, jesus-y way. Super pretty.Being a staunch atheist myself, I slunk around it like I probably wasn't really wanted there, but it made it feel like an adventure. Lots of dense trees and bushes and other foliage. The sun barely gets through the tree canopy, so it does that cool dappled and misty effect thing.I went about an hour before sundown, and there weren't many people there. The little walkway to the shrine island is all shrouded by trees, so it's all kinds of epic to walk alone into the dark void that is the entrance. I waited until there wasn't anyone on the island and had it all to myself the whole time. Well, all to myself except for whoever might have been in the church. I didn't go in the church for fear I might catch on fire from the fuel of my sins. Also, I didn't want to have to talk to someone married to god. Weirdos. One amazingly repulsive thing about the Shrine of Saint Therese is that there's a shrine to the "victims of abortion" on the island. The shrine itself isn't gnarly, but the idea that they have one is. Surprise! I'm pro-choice.The Shrine of St. Therese is worth an hour or so because the landscape is so freakin' beautiful I can see why the Catholics wanted to steal it away from nature. I even saw a freakin' bald eagle gettin' its soar on while I was peeing at one of the stations of the cross. I know, I'm an evil atheist... really though, I just really had to pee really bad.
The cabins are amazing. The views can't be beat. Sunsets will blow your mind. Out the road a bit. A great place to relax and stay.
The shrine of St. Therese is nestled in woods that are beautiful and serene. The paths out on the peninsula give views of the ocean that are great. The quiet beauty of the shrine has a serenity that is special. My grandkids enjoyed having so many neat places to explore there.
This is a tiny little chapel, a good distance from the town of Juneau. The surroundings are both serene and beautiful, and the church itself is well-built. It's a good little side trip and opportunity to relax. If you're in Juneau for a few days, it's worth visiting, but you do need your own transportation to get there.
This is not an attraction for thrill seekers, gift shoppers, foodies, or anyone with a short attention span. The chapel/shrine are located across a causeway, only accessible by foot. Once you're there, it feels like a different world, and is very peaceful. You don't have to be Catholic to go, but it is obviously a religious attraction. So if you're Catholic or just interested in learning more, then go. You will need a car to get to the Shrine from Juneau. I think it's about a 45 minute drive from downtown Juneau. Don't use a GPS, you'll get lost. Just take the Glacier Hwy until you see the sign for the Shrine. When we went there were only like 2 other people there, so it was a great time for reflection and meditation. A few more people showed up, but there is plenty of space to spread out. There is a small gift shop, but no staff to be found. It is all self guided and on the honor system. Go!
Did a night hike here with some friends, was twilight when we got there and is such a gorgeous lil place, (kind of creepy at night) but otherwise a really gorgeous spot to watch the sun disappear behind the horizon.
It's like walking into a guarded, sacred secret. The Shrine is on a little island connected by a spit of land. You can't even see it till you're across and in the trees. It's almost magical in nature. You don't have to be religious to enjoy this little treasure
Beautiful little chapel with nice stained glass windows featuring Jesus with women of the Bible. What made the memory and will forever be remembered is two women, saying Hail Marys together. What a joyful sound. Thank you ladies for allow me to benefit from just observing your prayer.
Beautiful area. The Shrine of St. Therese is secluded about 18 miles "Out The Road" from downtown Juneau. Located on an island and hidden by the trees until you walk across the short distance from the mainland. Holy Ground, beautiful church and stations of the cross on the island. A must see area in Juneau.
You will find some seal around the island. Small church on an island, very nice quiet walk. Easy walk path
We were there on a cloudy and rainy day which probably meant we didn't experience the full beauty of the place, but even walking around in the rain, we were able to feel the peacefulness that surrounds this place. We saw eagles and other fish and animals and were told that you can often see whales from the top of the hill by the chapel. I would have loved to have spent more time just wandering among the stations of the cross, but the rain forced us to turn back. The only reason I gave it a very good and not excellent was that our tour bus was not allowed to come down the hill and pick us up. She dropped us off at the bottom of the hill and said she would be back down to pick us up, but then was told she had to stay in the parking lot at the top of the hill. My parents who were traveling with us are elderly and the hill was difficult for them to climb, and even though our bus driver explained this to the caretaker, she was not allowed to drive down the hill to the handicapped parking spot just to pick us up. It wasn't crowded, in fact we didn't see anyone else while we were there, so it certainly didn't seem right to make my parents walk up the steep hill.
