Nice walk to the water fall, very nice view towards the glacier. And the best thing, you could stand just in front of the water fall and feel the power it have.
When friends arrive by air or sea, Nugget Falls is often the first trail we take them to see. The flat ¾ mile trail is an engaging glimpse into what Juneau has to offer. While this can feel like a bustling big city street during peak summer, it is often clear in the early mornings and late evenings perfect for painting and photography. The trail branches off in front of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors center and skirts the lake. Several little creeks along the way can form beautiful little pools that create great wildlife hot spots. The young budding forest is full of Sitka alder, black cottonwoods, and several species of willow. This is a popular highway for porcupine, beaver, and red squirrels in the early spring and late fall. While this is a spectacular bird watching area, it is a sensitive nesting area, especially for Arctic terns. The sandy peninsula is often tempting to explore, but please be cautious of disturbing wildlife as it is often crucial times for them when they choose to use this area.Out at the falls the thunderous tumult of Nugget Creek is an awe-inspiring experience. There are not many places where one can easily walk so close or even into a waterfall of such magnitude. Even though the waterfall only came out from under the Mendenhall Glacier in the 1980’s, the glacier is already barely visible from the sand spit below the waterfall. Often times icebergs can be seen from this viewpoint, but less and less of the glacier is visible every year. The sandy trail is is relatively new and fairly wide due to its high traffic during the summer. In the winter it is rarely used as locals tend to ski or skate via the lake when it freezes. Keep in mind that the ice near the waterfall is much more thin due to the current created by the falls. No matter which season, it is a definite must if you have the time.
We took the bus from the downtown port area to Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. The hiking trials are very easy and we were able to complete them in a short amount of time. We saw bald eagles and salmon. We did not see any large animals (bear, etc.) but there had been sightings. This site was beautiful. I highly recommend taking the trail to Nugget Falls because that is where I think I took the best pictures. It is an amazing place and really put me in awe. There were even icebergs!
It will take 20 minutes walk from the Museum..The path to falls will divide in mid way ,one go via woods and reach falls. On the way you can see the sign board Bears area! .feel the sprinklings of water from the falls.we enjoyed Fall s very much.
Okay cruisers, skip the bus and take a taxi to Mendenhall. It is only a few bucks more and you get there faster, giving you a chance to walk the path to Nugget Falls by yourself. Great views of Mendenhall and beautiful iceburgs reflected in the water. This waterfall is great because you can get very close to it without getting too wet.
If you're already at the glacier, you might as well walk out (20 minutes?) to the falls so you can see the glacier even closer, and feel an icy spray from the falls! Beautiful, loud and fun!
If you have come this far to see the glacier you might as well take the easy trail to Nugget Falls and also get a close up view of the glacier. The hike is easy with great views along the way. when you get to Nugget Falls you can go down onto a sand bar (beach) and get a close up view of the glacier and even get close enough to the falls to get a little mist on you from the falls. It is a great photo opp where you can get the galcier and the falls together in one shot.
Panoramic and close up views. Great mile plus hike to falls and Mendenhall glacier. Beautiful outdoor experience.
Part and parcel of the Mendenhall Glacier visit. Again, quite accessible by bus or group transport from any part of town and a pretty easy walk down to views of the Falls and Glacier.
I took a walk out to Nugget Falls in mid November. The tourists were all gone (and the visitor center was closed). The occasional others out there were mostly locals walking their dogs. The weather was good - clear and chilly. I was told by one of the locals that if I had come in the spring either the place I was standing would have been underwater, or the water would be coming over the falls with such force that I would be sopping wet from the spray. While no Niagara or Yellowstone, the falls were still impressive. I spent some time taking photographs, both slow exposures to get the water blur and high speed exposures to capture individual droplets. While it is a 2 mile round trip to the falls, with my side excursions for a better angle I probably covered closer to 3 miles.
This is a great hike my kids love to take. It's only about a mile long, well maintained trail. You can get right up next to the falls, and the views of the glacier close up are great as well.
Not a bad trek at all! Very powerful waterfall that makes the walk totally worth it. Near enough to the glacier viewing area so that you can fit both into even a short trip.
Do it. Gets you closer to the glacier, and the falls are very powerful and beautiful. Take shoes you don't mind getting dirty, a jacket, and a bear bell.
Walked here and hiked/ climbed a bit up the side of the waterfall! Great time, lots of fun! Really beautiful spot, and so worth going to.
The Nugget Falls path was easy to traverse, but found a branch-off, which was a little shorter, and afforded a good view of the falls and the glacier. The shorter path turned out to be a good option due to the limited time we were there. A ranger was available near the front of the glacier to answer questions (and take a photo).
