If you give Scott with Tongass Kayak Adventures an idea, he will do his best to make it happen. Our family and friends have employed the services of Tongass Kayak Adventures 4 times over the past 15 years. Each time we have been completely satisfied with Scott's attention to detail, from helping us plan our trips to providing us with the kayaks, tents and related gear necessary for us to enjoy our excursions. Scott has provided us with excellent kayaks and we've always felt safe and comfortable with his equipment. He has always been on time or early for our scheduled drop off/pick-up times. Whether whale watching, kayaking through icebergs to view a glacier, a visit near a seal haul-out area, hiking in the lush rainforest, salmon or halibut fishing, or an extended river trip camping excursion, Scott used his expertise and familiarity with the area to give us the awesome experiences we were looking for. We highly recommend Scott and Tongass Kayak Adventures!!
A friend and I went to Alaska in August 2014. In Petersburg, we were lucky to search for whales with Scott from Tongass Kayak Adventure. It was an amazing day. We saw humpback whales beaching the water; head slamming the water; traveling in pairs and groups and best of all--6 or 7 whales bubble-net feeding together. We compared trips with other travelers, and our whale watching with Scott far exceeded any others. If you get the chance, ask for Scott and go see some whales!
I planned my 2 week Inside Passage trip around this adventure. When he couldn't accommodate my first choice date, I switched days. Anyone who has used the ferry system knows this isn't easy. 3 weeks before my arrival I called to confirm and to get details. During this call I specifically asked if he would cancel on me if it was just me signed up and he very clearly said no. Had he said yes I would have A) made a back up plan, and B) been more diligent about confirming the day or two before. He did not call me to cancel until 2:30 the day before...less than 24 hours notice. I was already on the ferry headed to Petersburg. I ended up stuck in Petersburg for two nights. There is nothing to do in Petersburg. It cost me $400+ in hotel and food costs to sit in a holding pattern before I was able to catch a ferry out. I do not make a lot of money and to waste $400 sitting around a town that has nothing to do really sucked. Most tour companies require a 2 week cancellation notice from their customers...that respect should be given back to us as well.
Been renting kayaks and arranging drop offs in Southeast Alaska for over 15 years and Scott and Tongass Kayak Adventures was by far the best. The equipment was top notch and he included many extras (like sponges and pumps for each kayak, as well as a kayak repair kit and cans of bear spray). He was very knowledgeable and punctual. Very accommodating for our schedule. Can't recommend him enough!
We contacted Tongass Kayak Adventures for a trip to the LeConte Glacier. We didn't want to kayak. Scott gave a great trip. He worked his boat up the fjord to within a mile of the glacier. Not sure how he got through. He is very knowledgable about the area. Great stories. Saw lots of harbor seals with their pups. Icebergs. Calving glacier. Rollins icebergs. A humpback whale. We couldn't have been happier.
We hired Scott to water taxi us to a forest service cabin . We rented three double kayaks and his equipment was some of the best we have ever rented. He included a well stocked safety bag as well. He was punctual and very friendly. We would highly recommend him to anyone.
Returned to Petersburg AK on July 25 until August 1st with 7 other family members and enlisted to a week of madfun with Scott and Alex from Tongass Kayak. The weather was simply incredibly beautiful, just ask anyone; blue skies, calm Frederick sound waters and perfect 70's temperatures. The humpback whales at Farragut bay must have agreed for they appeared in mass, breaching non stop, tail and flipper slapping. We spent several hours taking in the spectacle and sonic booms echoing each massive body/water impact. Spent time halibut, salmon and shrimp fishing as well. Trip to Le Conte Glacier turned stunning clear calm waters with only berg chunks parts way which allowed us to get next to the (no too close) falling and creaking ice walls. Clear skies and no wind made the ride a joy on two Helms motor boats. We hunted for petroglyphs and pictographs of native Alaskan symbols next to Le Conte as well. Visited the Salmon(King) and Coho hatcheries during a hiking day to stunning forest of huge Sitka's Spruce. Scott and assistant Alex gave it all to keep the pace and multiple interests within our various ages group. Flight from Washington to Petersburg and back is tough on Alaska Airlines 737-400 series jets far too crowded for such a long trip.
We spent a week in Petersburg in June 2013. We did both the Petersburg Creek paddle and the LeConte Glacier paddle. What an adventure! The groups were small, 6 people to LeConte and 4 up Petersburg Creek, which allowed Scott to give all of us individual attention. The paddles were doable for all levels of paddlers, and Scott made everyone feel expert! We saw seal mamas and pups, sea lions, and whales. Paddling around the iceburgs was truly amazing!
We greatly enjoyed our time kayaking up the Petersburg Creek and Le Conte glacier, both experiences were highly gratifying and not too challenging for two 40 someyearolds. The scenery, whoa! perfect blue sky and Bald eagles sitting of turquoise icebergs, seals. whales and great friendly guides, it's like a trip with long time friends. Scott is a personable, knowledgeable and responsible owner who cares about his customers and does what is needed to assure safety and complete enjoyment of the kayaking experience.
Our kayak trip to La Conte Glacier was cancelled after I called the guide the night before to confirm our trip. He then told us he was not able to go due to illness. We were really disappointed as it was too late to arrange another tour. We totally understand that people get sick, but this was the only day we had in Petersburg and we will likely never get back there. A company who advertises on the web should have a backup plan (ie: another guide).
We did a guided, four-hour paddle with Scott owner of Tongass Kayaks. We crossed the Wrangell Narrows to the Petersburg Creek Wilderness area. The paddle was easy, traveling with the incoming tide up to Petersburg creek. We saw some bears and had a bit of rain. We road the tide when it changed and paddled back to Petersburg. Scott was a great guide/owner, kayaks were well maintained; gear we used was good. Over all a very good paddle.
If you are interested in whale watching, getting up close and personal with a glacier and maybe getting in a day or more of kayaking, this is the organization to go with. We had a great experience with Scott as our guide. This isn't someone who just 'boats' you around, but a knowledgeable, experienced guide, well versed in his area of expertise. As for kayaking (my first time) I would rate this experience and getting close to the icebergs as ultra cool. Right up there with hiking in Peru and seeing the sunrise over Ayers Rock in Australia.
Just had a wonderful day at LeConte Glacier with Scott from Tongass Kayak Adventures. It was cold and rainy but no one cared as the scenery was amazing and Scott kept the day fun and interesting. He is a very knowledgeable guide and a lovely man who does everything he can to make the day better for everyone. The hundreds of icebergs we saw en route to the glacier were ridiculously beautiful, in fact I took about 325 photos! The kayaking was a pretty relaxing couple of hours and the rest of the time we spent exploring the water for seals, seal lions, birds and flowers. If you're in Petersburg this is a definite must do.
The Leconte Glacier Bay was gorgeous, and floating through the fjord by kayak was amazing. We were in a two-person kayak to enable us to go farther, which was perfect because we were also on our honeymoon. Our guide was very knowledgeable and pleasant to be around.
My wife and I found Tongass Kayak Adventures when we searched for Alaska Kayaking. Located in Petersburg, a busy fishing village, which is nestled into the northern end of Mitkof Island in the inside passage, Tongass Kayak Adventures is run by Scott Roberge and he operates in a very efficient and safety conscious manner. Everything happens just as planned and on time. Scott employs young tour guides who are personable, competent and knowledgeable about the local environment. We went on the full-day kayak tour to LeConte Bay where we paddled into the bay, negotiating icebergs until we were able to easily see the face of the LeConte glacier. Our tour guides were Andrew and Alex who ably instructed us in the safe use of kayaks and passed on their detailed knowledge of the glacier. Although physically tired at the end of the day, we were exhilarated by the experience. The next day we went on the Three Lakes half-day hike and Andrew proved to be a very knowledgeable source of botanical information and also pointed out evidence of local fauna such as bear, moose, beaver and deer. Although it was a drizzly morning we thoroughly enjoyed the hike. We would recommend Tongass Kayak Adventures to anyone wanting that special Alaska experience.
