Travelled to Alaska in August, 2012, specifically to go salmon fishing with two friends and Sappah and Son. I hadn't been fishing since I was a kid, so was grateful to Terry for showing me the ropes again -- if, like me, you're out of practice, fear not, they will take care of you. A typical day was up before the sun, one of the first on the river to get the best spots, and then drift casting and pulling in a fish every couple of minutes or so. A lot of them were sockeye, which were not to be kept, but they still put up a fight and provided excitement. Plenty of silvers, though, which were what we were looking for, and Terry knew where to find them.In addition to our days on the river, our package included a day of halibut fishing out in the ocean and a float plane trip across the bay for salmon fishing in the remote wilderness, both experiences that I would highly recommend. Terry took care of all the fish cleaning, and our salmon and halibut was frozen on site -- at his recommendation, I waited until we returned to Anchorage and had mine professionally packed in dry ice at the airport and they stored it until my flight home. Fifty pounds of fish were checked as luggage and made it safely back to Minnesota. If I ever choose to go back to restock my freezer, it will be with Sappah and Son (assuming that they have any openings!)
Bucket list trip, Only complaint was not getting a King due to the restrictions placed by Alaska fish and Game ...but I hooked one and had to cut it loose.....caught so many Silvers it was cheaper to upgrade my home flight to first class for unlimited baggage for the fish boxes than it was to pay for the extra baggage fees!
What an amazing trip we had! I am now making this an annual event! They have two cabins with a nice bathroom/shower house in between. Great firepit and gathering area outside. Cabins are well equipped to make your own meals. The fishing was amazing! Due to the time of year we went (Labor Day weekend 2013 and scheduled again for 2014) we fished for silver salmon and rainbows. Our group limited on silvers and caught a couple trophy size rainbows that we released back. Terry was a great guide and this year we have enough people for both boats so his wife is guiding too. Cannot wait!!
Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to have Terry Sappah and Anna Sappah as guides on the Kenai River. In 2012 Anna took my roommate and I on the Kenai for sockeye (red salmon). We caught our limit. She knew the right places to fish on the river along with the right pole setup. In 2013 later in the season Terry took four of us out on the Kenai for coho (silver salmon) and Kenai River trout. Again we caught our limit in salmon and trout. Terry was also knowledgeable and had plenty of setups for both silver and trout fishing. On this trip he even made sure we could see a brown bear up on the lake. The daily rates are reasonable and on another occassion we rented a cabin while down in Sterling for another event. The rates of the cabins are also affordable.
One of the best guide services on the Kenai River. Friendly staff, nice comfy cabins and a beautiful shower house with indoor plumbing. Terry and Anna have been fishing the Kenai River for 20 years and are very knowledgeable about the area and the fish species available at any given season. They also have connections to help you book a Halibut trip if so desired.
