This island is totally awesome. It sits on the edge of Tongass National Forest. It is so loverly -- the trees on one side, the bay on the other -- so peaceful, calming, and soothing. I totally recommend that people visit this island [where the cities of Ketchikan and Saxman are located]
Head out to Ward for a lovely trail walk. Hope for a sunny day! South on the road go to Rotary -Buggy Beach. Interesting stones/ rocks. Herring Cove will have salmon and bears.
We rented motorcycles (Panhandle Motorcycle Adventures) and did a trip around the island - actually, back and forth since there is no "around". The lake in the interior is worth a gander. Drop in on Herring Cove to see some salmon making there way up the river. And at the other end, wind along the roads to Totem Bight and the marina.
Whats not to like, Revillagigedo is a fun place to live. we got Fishing, hiking, hunting, kayaking, bush planes, zip lines, motorcycle and bike and SUV rentals, We got it all but snow lol. RAINCITY!!!
Small friendly town, but too many bars and liquor stores for my taste, and too much alcohol being consumed for it's own good, unfortunately! Alaska has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol. I lived there for 14 years, in the late 1960's, till 1975. There are far fewer bars downtown now, and replaced by endless jewelry stores and tourist traps who cater to the thousands of summer day visitors from the cruise ships who pour in.
Most people either visit Ketchikan only when their cruise ship stops there, or go to take advantage of the salmon and halibut fishing opportunities. We went to visit family and explore the island a bit. It did not disappoint! From the hikes at Ward Lake, Lamonna Lake, and Settler's Cove, to the spawning salmon and black bears at Herring Cove, to the plane ride to Misty Fjords National Monument, to some exciting halibut fishing, Revilla (as the locals call it) and Ketchikan was great funAs Californians, we were also pleased that we missed much of the area's 160 inches of annual rainfall. We got to enjoy the lushness and the views without getting drenched. It's a great place to spend a week in August!
Beautiful scenery.Nice clean beaches with bald eagles.
I am biased - I live here, and the island, known simply to locals as Revilla is an adventure playground. Ketchikan is the main town and with 26 miles of road it forms a small enclave of people while the rest of the island remains free of major settlements. The Misty Fjords National Monument claims the east side of the island and the US Forest Service maintains cabins and row boats for rent for people wishing to fly into them for a wilderness getaway. The island is really exceptional to explore by boat, kayak or sea plane. I have all three and spend my summers in the outback enjoying the heck out of life. One of my best trips was a three week paddling trip circumnavigating the island. It has a lot to offer, a bear obsevertory, hot springs, rainforest trails, fjords, lakes and oh yes, lovely trout fishing. It is about 120 miles to circumnavigate and if you have good paddling skills this is a fantastic trip.Chartering a seaplane to take you to a wilderness lake is another fun weekend. Close lakes, and therefore cheaper because of less flight time, are Heckman Lake, Patching Lake, Ella and Manzanita. Manzanita Lake cabin will leave you breathless. However there is a health warning! You may fall in love with this land and end up like me, hopelessly in love still ten years later.
