Probably only a winter display, as the Fur Rondevzous was in progress and the depot really has no wintertime passenger service. The railroad displays were well done and there is a small gift shop inside the station.
Very convenient to Comfort Inn at ShipsCreek. Buy your ticket the day before boarding train and avoid the long ticket line. Suggest purchasing a seat located in the dome allowing you a birds-eye view of the scenery as you travel to Seward. Boarding process is very efficient and the RR staff is friendly and helpful.
Saw many bald eagles & we really enjoyed the sights along the way.So much to see along the countryside. Seats are roomy & you could see alot
We completed our trip from Fairbanks and just took a cursory view of the depot but did purchase items from the gift shop.
We were checking out the sights in Anchorage and stopped at the Railroad Depot. There is an old locomotive in front across the street. Nice to take pictures in front of. The depot was clean, the restrooms were extremely clean, I was surprised. Definitely a place to check out.
For railroad history buffs this is a great place. This railroad is different from the ones in the lower 48 states. Fun to explore.
Rode the Alaskan Railroad August 2014 with my father in law, husband and 2 sons 12 and 13. Got up early and arrived at Depot. Nice little gift shop and baseball memorabilia to look at while waiting for train. Not a lot of seating though while waiting. Had the Dome Car reservations and our seats were very nice. Ate breakfast in the dining car but it was a bit of a "stampede" to get a place to sit. We did have a very nice breakfast and food was very good. Not sure though if I would eat in dining car again because you are taking time away from the scenery. This was an amazing trip from Anchorage to Seward. We saw Belugas in the distance, a golden eagle and moose. I was even able to get some pretty good photos through the windows. Because we were in the dome car, we were able to gain access to all the other cars. It was very interesting to walk to the other areas and sit down for a bit to see it from different perspectives. I highly recommend doing this. We even were in a top car which had low ceilings and large side windows which made you feel like you were immersed in Alaska's beautiful scenery. There was also a nice car with stools, alchol/non alcohol drinks, food and snacks. The conductor walked around and was very entertaining! I am so glad I did this on the way to Seward. It was longer than driving but a wonderful experience. We took the bus back to Seward because it was cheaper and we could leave Seward earlier but boy did I miss the train!!
Train geeks will love to hang out here for viewing passenger & freight trains nearby. Love the gift shop inside!!!!
ride the train to Whittier and then take a glacier cruise out of Whittier. Train ride provides great views of the inlet. Cruise provides great wildlife viewing and calving glaciers. Fun day trip.
I've been riding the ARR for more than 20 years - almost all of them (the rides, and years) were associated with train trips from Anchorage to Seward as part of a train/boat tourist trip. I used to be a fishing guide and would extend some of the clients trips with this feature. It's a trip I suggest for anyone visiting our fine state. This particular trip was with my wife, sister and her husband - their first-time visit to Alaska. So, for the depot...it's reminiscent of something out of the 30's if it were somewhere like New York or Chicago. I liken it to the smallest Grand Central Station I've ever been in. But it's timelessness is one of its greatest features. No, it's not that old and tired, it's just got that much character. The staff are great and handle the typical crush of people - there's either a trainload or almost no one - as they get ready to load and go, or return. I've also witnessed more than a few 'tourist trains' (entire trainloads returning from a Denali overnight) as they unload, gather baggage and leave. It works pretty orderly for a small-time operation; it's a big as it gets up here. There is a coffee station that has some assorted food items but it's no restaurant. The ARR station is the beginning and/or end for many Alaskan travelers and visitors. It's a welcome place both coming and going. It's not necessary to be traveling to stop by and look it over but, except for train fans I don't know that many would stop by. It's not that far away from the heart of downtown so can be a walk from a hotel.
We took the train one year to the State fair and we had a ball. The ride is scenic and relaxing and pulled right up to the front gate of the fair. At the end of the day, it took us right back to Anchorage. We stayed at The Historic Hotel and all we had to do is walk up some steps and we were back to our room. They have a very nice gift shop as well. Not your normal cheesy tourist gifts but very nice, classy selections.
The train cars are generally clean and well-kept. Some cars have better seating than others, but there is no way to tell in advance which car you will be assigned to. Nice snack bar and restaurant for lunch or dinner on the trip. The depot can be crowded, but even so your luggage is generally off-loaded quickly and is easy to find.
We spent a short time here as we waited to board the Alaskan railway train to Denali. The Depot had lots of characteristic features and was a charming place. The attendants were very friendly and efficient. They gave us all the information we needed and answered all our questions even though they were quiet busy. We were able to buy drinks and snacks before we boarded and visit the small gift shop. Once the train arrived we were shown to our carriage and continued our journey through this amazing state. On our return a few days later we had the opportunity to take photos and take in our surroundings for the last time.
Crowded when we first arrived but they were very efficient in getting people on and settled. Seats were wide and comfortable with nice big windows. Food was good and facilities clean. staff knowledgeable and helpful.
