This trail is one of the best in the entrance area of Denali NP. It's moderate as far as trail grading goes. I think the NP titles it "moderately strenuous", but I don't think it earns the strenuous notation. Either way, it's a good hike. My children (4 & 6) had no trouble at all with this trail. My suggestion is to ride the bus and visit the sled dog demonstration/kennel area and then hike the Rock Creek trail back to the visitor center. It's better than the Roadside trail because of views and getting away from the road. However, you could make a loop by hiking the Roadside trail to the dog sled area and then hiking the Rock Creek trail back. Rock Creek trail from the visitor center, has a steady elevation increase and then a quick drop down at the end. From my suggested start at the dog sled area, it's a quick increase in elevation and then a slow decrease (easy and relaxing) all the way to the visitor center. The trail is well marked and easy to follow.
This is a great trail with many options. You can also leave the trial to visit the dog sled area which I highly recommend. It is a very easy trial about 4.5 miles but there are smaller options.
Very good walk through the forest, just demanding enough. The spruce offered nice shade and light. Ended by sled dogs so we could see them without a crowd and then get the shuttle back.
Connects with the Taiga/Roadside trails and skirts the high hillside. Similar high boreal forest views, like Mt Healy. No Alpine shots or Parks Hwy views. Beautiful, lush, secuded and loaded with wildlife.
This was I nice hike through the beginning of Denali National Park. It starts at the Visitor Center and runs through till the Sled Dog Kennels. About 2 miles, even an amateur like me could finish it in less than 75 min (including breaks for photography and blueberry picking). The views are great even though we didn't see any moose, not even a squirrel! Just some added info, if you just completed a tour then the admission to the park is included and is valid for 7 days from the day of the tour. You might just want to hold on to the ticket stubs.
We took this trail down from the Sled dog kennels. It took us about 45 min. to do it with 2 kids. We saw 2 moose down in a valley at one point. Bring bug spray or you will be eaten alive.
This hike from visitors center to sled dog kennels takes about 2 hours and is moderate with almost all uphills. There are few spots to sit and view beautiful vista. Well maintained crushed gravel path.
Michelle got out of the van seeing a moose in a loud voice "Moose, moose, cool my first moose." She had studied and was informative and had a reference book to look-up foliage. Even on the trail she spotted a moose and went through the moose, moose, cool routine.Would not pay to take this hike again!
We took the Rock Creek trail for 45 minutes or so. Fantastic trail and views. Hike-able in mid-may only due to the fantastic work the rangers had done to create ditches for the snow-melt runoff.Addnl info: Visitor center is nice.We took the (bus) Natural History Tour. Very entertaining driver.Heard that the folks that took the longer tour (further into park) saw 5 bears.Note that if you go in mid-May there are no leaves on the trees (not as pretty as later, but better chances to see wildlife).
