This gallery is amazing. I am no art buff but I love this place and the artwork is truly Alaska. Be sure to pit stop here-well worth it!
The artwork and sculptures were fantastic. The location and its history is worth the time to visit. Beautiful art. Also great to see the original cabin on the grounds.
After a great lunch in Homer, we decided to check out the Norman Lowell Studio & Gallery that we had seen on our way to Homer. I tend to steer away from art galleries as I typically get bored quickly but this one was so great! Mr. Lowell has a fabulous gift of not only painting but sculpturing and carving too! He also had other works of Alaskan artists there too for us to enjoy. When we were about to leave, we saw Mr. Lowell in the gallery. Even though he is now legally blind , he is supposedly seen in the gallery almost on a daily basis. We all really enjoyed his Alaskan themed art! Too bad it was out of our price range but understandable with his caliber of talent!
Anne from the Soldotna visitor information center told us about this place. We normally would not stop at a art gallery. This place is absolutely amazing. Huge beautiful Alaskan works of art. Just a fascinating story about Norman Lowell. We did not get to meet him but we did get to see his original cabin. If you're heading to Homer stop at this place.
Met Norman and his wife and they are amazing, he is a true Alaskan and an unbelievable artist, what an amazing studio
We stopped at the Norman Lowell Gallery because several people had recommended it. What a treat! He was there and greeted us. There was a steady stream of visitors while we were there. He and his wife homesteaded there and he has been painting Alaska all these years. His work is magnificent. Most of it is not for sale, but some is and there were prints available, too. The gallery is a beautiful place with chandeliers, a grand piano and beautiful displays of his work. He is now blind, but his work will always portray the true beauty of Alaska.
My husband and I were visiting friends in Homer and they told us about the Norman Lowell Gallery. It's easy to miss since it's not really advertised but we searched it out as we made the drive from Homer back to Anchorage. I am so glad we did! What a fantastic experience! This wonderfully talented man is so prolific with his art and so kind and willing to share his beauty and joy with everyone that stops to visit. We consider ourselves so blessed to have been there on a day when the great man himself was running around the gallery in his wheelchair. Other than he and his daughter, we were the only people there so he took a great deal of time telling us the stories behind the paintings. He has captured the heart of Alaska and transported it into this building off Sterling Highway. I would urge anyone to go and see the beauty of his work. Absolutely amazing.
It is easy to drive down the highway without stopping for this attraction. It is not advertised. I learned about the gallery from other travelers. Norman and his wife homesteaded in Alaska from Iowa in 1958. They built their home and raised 5 children at this location. When Norman wasn't providing for his family he would travel the area making sketches of the landscape for his future paintings. Several large rooms display his beautiful work and artistic work of other Alaskans. Norman greeted us as we entered and answered our questions about his work and homesteading in Alaska. We spent two very enjoyable hours in the gallery which is free.
My husband and I own a lodge on the Kasilof River here in Alaska. We always tell our guests who are venturing down to Homer that they MUST stop at mile 161 and see the Norman Lowell gallery. The talent this wonderful man has will literally take your breath away. For those visitors who have never seen the beauty of Alaska in the winter months, or witness the majestic northern lights, Mr. Lowell's paintings capture the true essence of that experience (and they don't have to endure below zero temperatures to witness it). He is always there to talk to visitors and share stories. Make sure you take the walk back through the incredible gardens and see the homestead cabin. Just thinking of surviving the Alaskan winters with children in that little cabin will make give you great respect for this man and then to see the wonders of Alaska through his eyes....well, there are just no words to justify that experience. This is a must see on your way to Homer. Admission is free but the experience is priceless.
Another don't miss. Incredible talent. It is hard to believe this studio is in Anchor Point, AK but then again it is another reason why it is so amazing. Norman was in the studio and was very helpful. Loved the whole setting.
Wow! This incredibly beautiful space is part museum, part art gallery, and part celebration of nature's glory and one man's peerless ability to capture and enhance it. Mr. Lowell's style is part naturalistic and part impressionistic, and the colors and scale of some of these paintings will take your breath away. I'm not really a fan of paintings done with acrylics, but his ability to catch a three-dimensional aspect of a waterfall or frost on a window is beyond belief. Plan on at least an hour, more if Mr. Lowell is present to talk to you.
Worth your time, his talent is immense and his work is unbelievable. He's nearly blind and in a wheelchair and still painting...
If you're traveling to Homer, do NOT miss this studio and gallery. Norman Lowell and his wife, Libby, have lived a fascinating life in Alaska and celebrated his beautiful paintings (oil, watercolors and other mediums) by constructing an immense, beautiful gallery to showcase them. The gallery also highlights exquisite displays of artwork from Alaska. The Lowells have gifted the showing of all of these national treasures free to all those who just stop by to view. Don't miss this opportunity. Thank you, Norman and Libby.
This is a must see in Homer, Alaska. Mr. Lowell, who is likely to greet you at the door in his wheel-chair, captures the light, space, and color of Alaska perfectly. I am a semi-professional photographer and in my dreams I capture the essence of a landscape with the power and beauty of Mr. Lowell’s brush. Be advised, you will not be able to just “see” this gallery. There are hundreds of paintings displayed spanning decades of work, and you will not want to leave. If you are driving to Homer you have no excuse to miss it since its right off the Sterling Highway near the Anchor River Bridge.
Indeed surprising. You probably have to KNOW about it, to find it.Norman Lowell has a very impressive art gallery, both in size and in content. And most important it contains his own most beautiful paintings, which he created in decades of work. He captures Alaskan views as most of us can only hope to see. A very nice experience for anyone who appreciates art in general and nature paintings in particular.
