I like the way all the buildings were moved from other parts of Alaska....I enjoyed the Aircraft museum and the train ride around the park. The stern wheel steamer was interesting especially the diarama's inside. We liked the moving theater presentation of the 49ers and miners that tried to make it to the gold fields. Plus how many died in their search for gold.......
Summer in the interior is a Wonderful thing and having this great location to take the family is sure a nice option.Although open in the winter, most of the park is dormant, but Pioneer Park in the summer has Much to offer! The kids will enjoy the train ride and the adults will enjoy the shops and history. There is some food sold in the park or you can bring it in and have a pick-nic.The "Alaskan Salmon Bake" is also on the grounds and a great stop if hungry for local food.Overall, great place for a local or tourists to enjoy the day or a few hours.
It's ok, but its age is really showing. Maybe the town should float a bond issue for renovating it. I really liked the dioramas inside the old riverboat. Too bad they've been vandalized!!!!
So, this place rocks. Like, seriously rocks. They took old, historic buildings from the area and stuck them all in one place and filled them with different artsy things and gift stores. The houses or buildings have their histories posted outside, and one is so awesome it's just this Kitty lady's old house, with all her old stuff being a little museum with wonderful guides that will tell you her whole story.Dogs are welcome, and there's a few clean-up stations with poop bags around. There's also a playground for the kids, and a little train that circles the place. There's an old riverboat (the Nenana?) planted in the center, and she has beautiful dioramas inside of different villages in Alaska in her heyday. There's also an big old train you can explore, as well as a few geocaches nearby. The local artists do amazing work, and it's almost impossible to leave without taking something with you. There's also a place that has a "40 below" room, with winter gear, of course, so you and your loved ones can discover what a real winter feels like. Also has a heritage center and an old aviation museum. There's an old-timey photo place, an old saloon with live music nightly, and lots of food stands as well- of different ethnicities- so there is something for everybody! No entrance fee. Is also snuggled tight with the Alaska Salmon Bake place, which is delicious (although pricey) and has wonderful displays. Make sure you use the gold mine entrance for that place! It is fun to walk through.
A little village between the airport and downtown. This is what every city should have, a free entertainment area with a little history, a little shopping, and places for kids to play. The park is accessible year around, but the shops are only open during the summer season. Theater productions in both the larger and smaller theater are all year. Many other year round activities as well.
Plenty to do that doesn't kill the budget: entertainment, food, stores, history, etc. Definitely worth the visit.
We went during the winter time so the cabins are closed. However, they put up Christmas lights on them so we still end up spending at least an hour there to take pictures. But make sure you dress warm. Our toes were almost frozen and we were forced to go back into the car because of the cold.
Nice place to spend a few hours while in Fairbanks mostly outdoor attraction food for purchase free parking
During my stay in Fairbanks I did a Salmon Bake and Golden Heart Review evening tour. The evening I was there was the last salmon bake of the season so it was extremely busy. There were long lines for the for the salmon bake and seating at times was limited. There was reasonably choice of salads and hot food. Dessert was limited and again it was a line up and slow being replenished. The review has fun and gave a light hearted look at Alaskian life. Well worth going and this was the highlight of the night. If you go to the salmon bake the extra fee to attend the review is well worth it.
I was born in Fairbanks but just went back for first time in over 25 years. I will say "Pioneer Park" (wow that was hard to type) has improved greatly from my memory as a kid. If you are in fairbanks with your kids, be sure to take them here. You can see some good history, and there is a great playground for the kids!
Being from Australia I have always found the Wild West of the American 1800's fascinating...This historic park is certainly interesting although probbaly not for the whole familyHeaps of amazing historical facts, steam boats, Alaskan gold rush displayed items and much much more including a gold rush themed town you can walk around and even buy souvenirs from.Love it!!, best part is it's absolutely free to enter and have a look aroundWill reccomend to anyone heading north to Fairbanks
If you're interested in the Alaskan gold rush period I reccomended stopping by Pioneer Park (also known as "Alaskaland" by many locals). The shops are open in the summer, different food and sweet stores along with handcrafted shops. Much history is posted around the park. Also stop by the a Salmon Bake which has super delicious food, the salmon is my favorite complete with the buffet style green salads and potato salad, fresh rolls and much more. For dessert cake and blueberries... Yum!! Is it summer yet??
We had dinner at the Salmon bake which was very good. The little shops had just closed for the season when we got there but the carousel was open and the playground was open. So we had fun there.
There is a lot going on at Pioneer Park off and on. I appreciate the premise of it, offering a place for families to go and dogs on leashes. It is a nice place, but it's not the first place I would tell people visiting Fairbanks to go. There are some kitschy museums and tourist shops. There are a few great parks if you have kids (I don't) and I guess it's an okay place to walk your dog on a leash.
So many attractions close for the winter. We were there first week of Oct. and it was closed already. They let you come in and walk around but there isn't much to do. The antique museum was closed, but they were having a meeting there and let us in, and unlocked it for us!! They have a lot of very interesting antiques and some beautiful dioramas !! That was extremely nice of them and they were very friendly. Everyone we met in Alaska was super friendly and helpful ! Thank you so much to the friendly people of Pioneer Park !!
