We drove about 20 miles of this North and South of Fairbanks. On the way to a lodge to stay at. Nice scenic views along the way as well as the Alsaka pipeline to see at roadside station. I think there was a gold dredge there (but of no use in the winter).
Worth the time to drive there from Fairbanks (5-10 minutes). Walked under the pipeline, viewed the pipeline dowgs on display and read the signs. The scenery is great, there's a tourist shop across the street. The pull-off is near the area where Rt 2 reduces from 4 to 2 lanes North of Fairbanks.
Ever been to the artic circle? Most haven't. It's a long drive but you'll get there. Scenic drive. Make the day of it. Bring your camera and plans on driving all day. Have you been to the artic circle? I have. How cool is that?
A bit sketchy during deep winter, but beautiful. Did not see any wildlife, but others apparently have.
Nice roadway... completely useable even with lots of snow around the area... Roadway was quite clear and useable even in mid-December!
Steese Highway is a lovely and easy drive to see wildlife and a beautiful winter wonderland. The road is well maintained for at least the first 25 miles north of Fairbanks and the winter scenes were amazing.
Seeing the Trans Alaska Pipeline Suystem (TAPS), reading concise presentation on construction and operation, viewing a retired pig and current model was supported by the informational signage. Thank you for having this opportunity for Lower 48ers.
Scenery, traveling thru historic gold mining country, mountain passes include Cleary Summit, 12 mile Summit and Eagle Summit each unique in own separate way. The observations points are well worth stopping at. Awe inspiring views. The tailing piles from early 1900's until present time.
Drive up 80 mile to the artic circle. No gas stations no anything but mountains. We listened to am radio and stopped at the gold panning locations until we were inside the artic circle. Cool. Beautiful.
After finding few options of things we wanted to do in Fairbanks, the host at our lodge suggested we take a drive up the Steese Highway. We did for about an hour and found very little variation in the scenery. It wasn't unpleasant, just nothing special.
We love driving the steese highway and drive it all the time. Our favorite fishing spots are located off the steese. We've seen a few moose both driving and fishing. They're are lots of wild blueberry bushes along the road. Its gorgeous in the fall with the leaves changing and fall colors.
We drove 82 miles out the Steese Hwy and loved the views from this road. Just before we turned around we saw some crows down by the river and stopped to see what had their attention. My husband got a beautiful picture of a wolf that the crows were alerting to.
We enjoyed seeing the landscapes and scenery along this drive. It was pouring down rain which hindered our sightseeing. Beautiful area.
A long road, on ice through beautiful country side! Well placed and visible markers (IF you need them) Beautiful scenery - away from everyone :) Just be aware - as all reviews and information on this road - the road is for the truckers - give them their space.
It's a small highway 1 lane sometimes 2. People go quite fast so just be aware of others pulling out of their driveways or turning off the road. Nice scenery along the way. Oh look a Moose!
