This is a classic New England college that happens to be one of the best in the US. They have controlled very carefully the look and feel of the campus and the business on Spring Street. Great place to visit.
Williams College is well worth a stop when in the Berkshires, simply to see the campus that holds the title of #1 Liberal Arts College in the United States. That's the designation received from U.S. News and World Report in its 2014 ranking of 266 U.S. liberal arts colleges. Williams also received a #1 ranking from Forbes Magazine in its 2014 publication of America's Top Colleges. The hilly, well-maintained campus spreads out on both sides of Williamstown's Main Street and features both historic buildings and modern structures. I much prefer the historic ones, because they reflect the college's founding in 1793 and seem to fit better in a traditional New England setting.I recently found a stroll on the campus to be a nice break after being inside for hours, looking at the huge Mass MoCa installations in nearby North Adams. On this visit, I didn't have time to go inside the Williams Art Museum, but that is on campus and is free. The museum has about 13,000 works from all media and offers a major focus on modern and contemporary art. In the past, I've stopped there to attend temporary exhibitions and they have been quite good.
Always a pleasure to see what the Williams College Art Museum is up to. I wish, however, that they would display a far higher percentage of their permanent collection, especially the American artists. Their Grant Wood Death on the Ridge Road used to set the tone for an entire room or section. It seems to stand alone now. Where are the Maurice Prendergasts, of which they have so very many? I remember far more primitives than could be seen this trip. Avant-garde art is essential, but it should not dominate.
My son found paradise here. Charming, friendly and welcoming students, and cozy little town!!! Main street and small shops so charming. Williams College is a quintessential New England college town. So happy to know I will be coming back here for 4 years!!!
The town and the mountains and college are very historic and beautiful. Also not far from hiking trails and ny border. Also visited bird sanctuary in graft on ny. Most interesting! I'm a true bird lover and loved the owner of the sanctuary.
Not only is the location in the Berkshire mountains beautiful, this college in this small college town is truly remarkable. If you're one of the very few potential students to get chosen to attend Williams, drop everything and say yes! This is one of the best schools money can buy. Once you attend Williams, it will be a important part of your life forever.
Great place to be. I love this college and the town in which it is located. My daughter is a student here so maybe I am bias :-)
Beautiful campus. Come often for sports events. Lots of old buildings and some newer ones like Bronfman. Stopped into the Williams Shop and picked up a couple of knick-knacks. I run and the campus is great for that, up this path, down that. Stylish students mixed with jocks. Ate a nice meal on campus but can't recall the name. Winters here are very cold but if you've always wondered what it felt like to have the hairs inside your nose stiffen after ten minutes outside, Williams College is the place to do it.
I have visited this beautiful, historic campus at least four times in the past couple of decades. I have attended seminars here, stayed on campus, and eaten in the dining halls. It is rich in historic tradition, and utterly lovely. You don't have to attend college here to enjoy a visit to the campus. Just spend a few quiet hours strolling around the grounds and soaking in its history, which is what I did recently with a group of friends. The historic buildings and architecture are magnificent.
This is a highly competitive college to enter. It offers a rich curriculum with top professors. The student body is bright and talented.
We enjoyed wandering around this beautiful old campus. The buildings are historic and great to photograph! Because it was summer, we only saw a few students walking around.
This college is entitled as the number 1 Liberal Arts schools, the small class and the care from the professors. We love it.
It was a cold, rainy day, but the games were fun to watch. They could use some porta-johns nearby, though. Beautiful location....
We visited the area due to my son being interested in the school itself for 2014. I must say the school is exceptional in everything they so, so being a student here must be an honor and privilege. You will notice the school spirit and their intense passion, and though this can be said of other schools, it was a feeling transmitted from the moment you walked in. My complements to the staff at admissions and in special to all the students that make the tour part of their own experience. To share what they go through and just their day to day in an open and honest way goes to show the students they are and people they will be in society. Congratulations.
Took a ride to see Williams College (#1 liberal arts college in the country). It was well worth the drive. Rt. 2 (Mohawk Trail) is just an amazing drive. Winding roads with nice stops to take pictures of the mountains. Williamstown has some cute shops but we didn't park and it was move-in day for students and didn't feel like competing for a spot. The buildings are amazing and will go back again to explore further but this time when the leaves are changing.
