Lots of open green space and paved walkways. Just be careful not to go there when there are few people around and definitely avoid from before dusk on...not a safe neighborhood!
It's wonderful in the winter for sledding and snowshoeing and in the summer for a nice hike. A really large state park - has a great dog area with pond too.
I almost hesitate to write a review. Callahan State Park is a big, pretty state park in North Framingham. The parking lot off Winch Street is often full, but there are other parking lots and entrances that are much emptier and lead to trails that are not well known. If you want to get out in the woods, you don't have to drive out to the Berkshires or Maine/ New Hampshire. However, those of us who live in Framingham don't mind the lack of crowds. If people think of Framingham as Mall City and never discover the park, so much the better for us...
There a plenty of friendly people with their pets. The dogs are well behaved and have freedom to roam and make friends.
Dog owners have ruined what used to be a nice public park frequented by families. Now it is over run by dogs and full of dog crap. DCR needs to restrict the off-leash dogs and get this park back under control.
Callahan Park is a really nice spot that offers a very accessable trail (packed dirt, fairly flat) for folks and their dogs to walk along. My main complaint is that not all the dog owners are picking up after their pet. There is a trash bag and baggie station so I am not sure why this park is so littered with litter. I imagine with a few dedicated clean up sessions, it could be back to its former glory.
What a lovely Park. We were visiting Boston and went there with family members who routinely use this park for their dog-exercise routine. Came across lovely fields of wild flowers, saw signs of the approaching Fall, and took the walk on the Dam which was full of other dogs, and kids, all enjoying the hot, but beautiful, sunny day with their families. The Pond looked lovely, in spite of high bacteria levels for humans, and had a lot of dogs swimming there and enjoying the coolness of the water.A wonderful place to hang out and socialize.A good pair of walking shoes is a must.
A while back I took my cross-country skis to Callahan State Park in hopes of finding a new place to ski. Unfortunately all I found was a huge flat field of brown-dog-poo-polka dotted snow as far as the eye could see. While there is a baggie station for owners to use to pick up after their pets, its quite obvious no one uses them. IT WAS DISGUSTING. You could not take a step in any direction without having to avoid copious dog poo.Shame on all the dog owners who frequent this park. Someone should rub your noses in it.
We used to take our dog to Callahan before she passed. It is a great place to bring dogs to swim or play ball. It's very nice park for humans too!
Convenience to where I live, can go any time for free. I prefer the back parking area because of the dog walkers in the front area but the sky line in the front is beautiful and the open fields. Can walk all the way to the Marlboro pkg lot and Beebe Pond area also and cross country ski, ride horses in the past could be done. Some people bike the trails.
Don't get me wrong... I love dogs and owned large breeds BUT this area used to be a place where you could have a very nice picnic basket meal with friends down by the pond and a blanket! You could enjoy the radio control airplanes that clubs bring there and see them practicing their flights... That was fun! You could also fly kites and run with it and your children.... Forget that as you will need BOOTS!Today there are MANY COMPLAINTS from people who remember the horses and picnics and sunning yourself. The kennel clubs and dog owners who have taken over this area have ruined it for those who wanted to enjoy it the way it was. People do not pick up after there pets and they illegally turn their dogs loose to impose on others peaceful enjoyment. The trustees and state need to police the area better and lay down the laws. You can' t walk around without stepping in the smelly dog poop. Dogs come running at you and the famous last words from the owners are," don't worry he/she is FRIENDLY... I know people who have been jumped on and knocked over from an over zealous dog!!!
This park is large, with a huge open field and numerous trails for walking. A great spot to take your dog off leash. Also a small pond. The park has a couple different parking areas. The easiest entry is across the street from the 9 hole Millwood golf course.
