Gardner, MA was named The Chair Capital of the world, home of Heywood Wakefield Furniture Co. It is known for its several furniture retail outlets and is now called the Furniture Capital of New England. On Elm St, in front of the May Souter Grammar School sits a twenty foot chair and weighs 3,000 pounds.Another big chair, this one 12 feet tall and indoors, is displayed at the Gardner Heritage State Park's Visitor Center. And there's a huge yellow chair promoting a furniture company along Route 2A.With easy access to Route 2 which becomes the famed Mohawk Trail about 20 miles west, it makes for a lovely fall visit. When the leaves are changing, when pumpkins and apples are everywhere, this would make for a great day trip to enjoy this quaint landmark in the very heart of New England country.
