I was especially interested in the Assyrian palace reliefs and, at the other end of the spectrum, recent art chosen by Amherst students, including a digital piece.
This free little art museum has a number of works of very well known artists from ancient to modern on display. It is worth a visit. It is located on the campus of Amherst College and is not particularly well marked. Another difficulty is parking. There is no parking for the museum on campus and campus parking requires a permit. We parked on campus anyway and didn't get a ticket. Legal parking is off campus with a walk to the museum.
Nice little art museum at Amherst College. The area north of Springfield has several small college art museums. Amherst and Mount Holyoke are both free. Smith College does charge a $5.00 admission, but it's larger than the others. There's a more modest exhibit at Hampshire College, also free. All are worth a visit.
The Mead is on the Amherst College campus just back from the quad. It contains some truly excellent paintings that rotate from its large standing collection. Additionally, there are usually touring exhibits to enjoy. When you go, be sure to enter the room at the far right of the entrance (the Southern end of the building) where you will encounter a wonderful room that I will not describe, so that you may discover it afresh.
Great gallery of art with wonderful pieces that are not often found in a college museum. And while you are thereI suggest a visit to their Natural History museum to see the big dinos and the amazing minerals..
Amherst College shows a small portion of its extensive art collection at any given time. It is well-annotated and varied, from renaissance works up through contemporary, as well as some items from antiquity. The summer program "it's cool at the Mead" is especially worthwhile,as are docent tours. No admission charge. The student led programs vary greatly...some are very poorly prepared and presented. Others are well- worth the visit.
A beautifully designed museum of art, built with great heart and filled with wonderful works of masters artists from Renaissance Italy to the Hudson River Valley. A joy for art lovers and historians. Also has a small cafe.
Surprisingly fine quality art collection with plenty of well known artists. Quite diverse with ancient coins, Assyrian Wall Reliefs, Greek, Roman and even an Egyptian piece or two. Mostly paintings from 18-19th centuries.
We went here with friends and thoroughly enjoyed the Mead Art Museum including the Spire right outside. There was an exhibit of Japanese earthquake photographs amongst the other art works.
Small collection but first class artists' paintings and sculpture. Especially of interest are the early American paintings.
Behind the James and Stearns dormitories and next to the steeple of the old Stearns Church, the Mead Art Museum is one of the hidden treasures of Amherst College. There are two fine examples of the Hudson River School by Thomas Cole directly in front of you as you enter the Museum, and don't miss the Rotherwas Room
This museum is so awesome. It is quiet and reflective allowing the patron to genuinely soak in any given work. A nice variety. Wonderful portrait of George Washington allows you to imagine him posing as if you are the artist. If you go with kids you may be followed by a guard the entire time but do your best to ignore him. A minor inconvenience given that it is free. Oh and the mid evil room where Robert Frost read hi poetry is stunning. You must go.
Do visit this museum while in Amherst. you will love their variety and depth of offerings. It is locted within the campus of Amherst College.
Right off the main campus quadrangle surrounded by freshman dormitories, this small museum has an original, lovely collection of art gems, especially American painting but also lots of other works you can't wait to discover. It's beautifully displayed, you can wander around at will and muse. Closed Mondays, but for many days during the week--open til midnight!
Small museum, but it packs a punch! Very fine collection, particularly of American landscapes. Excellent temporary exhibits as well.
