It's very cool to have our local public library (Forbes) house a presidential library. It's easy to access, and the people who work there are incredibly knowledgeable!!
The library is quite small and lacking compared to all the modern Presidential libraries. Only took 15-20 minutes to see the whole library. I was a bit disappointed, but glad I was able to get it checked off my Presidential libraries list.
If you have a few minutes to spare and appreciate American history, stop on by. The library has limited hours, but any of the librarians ate happy to open it up and allow you to explore. The museum features many original possessions and artwork of Pres. Coolidge. Humble. Suddle. The presidential library that matches Silent Call to a T.Bring quarters! Meter parking.
This is a neat little treasure trove in Western Mass. It is technically in the Public Library building, and I think you have to call and request a visit as it is run by volunteers, and they are not always there. The room is stocked with memorabilia, and the volunteers know their Calvin Coolidge – I learned more about this relatively unknown President than I thought I would. The price and the humorous anecdotes, make it worth it!
My family and I went to the library on a quest to go to one "presidential" site for each president. We enjoyed the visit and learned from the exhibits. It did such a good job of exhibiting his life, it became apparent the a visit to Plymouth Notch, VT was necessary - which we didn't think so until visitiing he library. Call the Library and they can make appts. to view the room of historical items and explanations. They are very flexible!
The environment is charming and the remarkable books are easy to find, There are group meetings and though some of the groups use older books, the library tracks them down and provides them for visitors.
I loved the history. Very educational. Kind of dry for little kids, but great for high school and up!
On 2 or 3 trips to Northampton this museum (just an area on second floor of local library) has never been open. Got a brief off-hours visit; exhibits looked 1950s. But the library itself is great! Privately endowed, great Victorian building, replete with paintings by Gilbert Stuart, Samuel Morse, etc. Friendly staff. Convenient parking, centrally located.
A good 30 minute stop, this museum is great, but very small. Don't expect a lot, but our highlights were the paintings of Calvin Coolidge and his wife that were displayed in the White House, and the old desk from the oval office. Our tour guide was also very helpful and informative.
Coolidge was the last US President to not get an "official" Presidential Museum, but this remarkable resource manages to take up the slack very nicely. The casual visitor will enjoy the timelines of Coolidge's life and Presidency, and the youngsters will get a kick out of the fashions displayed, the photos of Coolidge in Native American headdress, and even Coolidge's electric horse! More serious scholars will also find a great deal of source material here available for research.Coolidge served on the City Council here, and was Mayor of Northampton before becoming Governor of Massachusetts and making national headlines. After his term in the White House, he returned to Northampton and lived out the remainder of his life, so it is a natural spot for this very nicely curated collection.
A nice stop in Northampton with a plethora of artifacts. A must for a presidential or Coolidge buff.
You'll find the museum located in the Forbes Library by Smith's campus. The museum itself consists of one room with exhibits about the Life of President Coolidge. The staff was incredibly helpful and eager to discuss all things Coolidge. The woman I talked to was quite humorous and you can tell she enjoys talking to visitors. Among the more interesting artifacts were the head dress given to the President by the Sioux, giving Coolidge the name "Chief Leading Eagle." There's also a scalping hatchet. Touring the museum room should take less than an hour. It's a great way to learn about Northampton's most famous adopted son.
