Not too many churches still have all the statues of saints and candles to light and say a prayer. There is also a gift shop downstairs where you can buy books, holy cards, medals, statues and more. Parking is on the surrounding city streets and you have to pay to park.
St. Josephs' Shrine is a quiet sanctuary in the middle of downtown Lowell. If you need some place to go to think or pray it is there for you. It is also a great place to go on "pilgrimage" because they have a number of saints' statues, holy candles and kneelers. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed frequently, groups assemble on a schedule to recite the rosary. Since it is a Catholic Church there are Masses every day, plus the sacrament of Reconciliation is available according to a schedule. From time to time they have special programs, like concerts and religious adult ed programs.Upstairs there is a museum to show the work and influence of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) order of priests who run the shrine. Downstairs is the religous articles store. It used to be called the bookstore, but I guess because of the emergence of on-line shoppint there aren't that many books on display anymore. In any case, if you are looking for statues, medals, rosaries, First Communion, Wedding and Anniversary gifts or religious holiday items, these are still available. We love going there - and have gone since our high school days, long, long ago, because it is a place of peace where an individual can feel calm and close to God.
