We toured the Jeremiah Lee mansion while visiting Marblehead. It was a rainy day so tourist traffic was light. We had the guide to ourselves. His knowledge of the history of the house, the Lees, the furnishings, and the period was encyclopedic. We’ve toured many houses and have never encountered a more knowledgeable guide. The house is still very original with many hand painted wallpapers and some original furnishings still in place. The house also has some invaluable, high end early American antiques. There are many houses in New England that visitors can tour. This house was exceptional.
My mom & I had walked by this mansion the evening before, knowing they were closed. There was a very friendly guide that just leaving that apologized for being closed & then took 5-10 min to give history of the mansion & Marblehead. We went back the next morning & were warmly greeted and walked through the house for an indepth tour & explanation. The guide was amazing - she started off asking how much time we had ( 2hrs) and paced herself & the level of details well. Her knowledge of history, the house & town was great & she was very personable and warm. The admission fee is $10 for adults - well worth every penny!Unlike many mansions, this has the original wall paper, the structure is almost unchanged from the time it was built.
We took a guided tour of the house and I would highly recommend it. The guide was so enthusiastic and well informed that it was a highlight of our stay
We stumbled over this beautiful piece of history by accident just wandering around the town. The minute we stepped inside the welcome was genuinely warm and yet professional and we were clearly told what was on offer for the modest entry fee. And what a great deal there is to be seen and admired. Covering three floors and over a dozen rooms the Mansion offers a rare glimpse of history in a town that swings between prosperity and savage decline. On a personal note we were grateful how promptly they noted quickly my wife was on a stick/cane and were most solicitous about access etc. and in finding a seat, so often overlooked. Like a previous writer our tour was almost private and the depth of knowledge and obvious enthusiasm of the Guides for their Mansion was infectious. They were keen to explain the building, its decoration and its contents. We learnt so much about the Mansion, its occupiers and the history of the surrounding town, that this really has to be a "must see". But so much of Marblehead is in that category. Make the effort to visit, your time will be well rewarded.
The Jeremiah Lee Mansion is stunning. Largely intact and undisturbed, the house and its wonderful collection of antique furniture and furnishings are quite spectacular. The only way you can see the exquisite details of the woodwork, the stairs, etc., is to visit because photography is not permitted, and photographs of the house have rarely been published. Our tour guide was excellent. The restorations undertaken to date have been very thoughtfully executed.
A magnificently well preserved 1700s mansion in old town Marblehead with fine antiques, beautifully preserved hand printed wallpapers and a facade of troupe l'oeuil style to mimic marble with wood. Lee figured prominently in early revolutionary war activities and escaped with his life when the British marched to Lexington and Concord.
The tour was fantastic as we got to learn about Marblehead and not just about the house. The tours we had was private since there was only 2 of us at that time. The tour guide was fantastic.
This is an amazingly well-preserved home from a very interesting period in Marblehead history. Small groups are led through the house be knowledgeable guides from the Marblehead Historic Society ($5 donation requested). Our guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. There is a small associated museum across the street with exhibits, gift shop, and bathrooms.
The historical society staff that waqlked us through the mansion was thorough and highly knowledgable of the building and the history. A great tour
Beautifully preserved 1768 home in the historic heart of Marblehead. Original wallpaper, period furniture, and excellent guides make this a must visit. Gardens are exquisite and kept in 18th century style with appropriate plantings.
We love visiting old houses and we appreciated not only the preservation work in the Lee Mansion, but also the knowledge and articulate manner of our tour guide. Through her knowledge, she provided us with a picture of the Marblehead area, the Lee family's fortunes through the furnishings and décor and how the house was used and run during its history. It was well worth taking the time to visit for a meagre $5. There's only street parking so keep an eye open for the 1 hour or 2 hour only signs up and down Washington Street.
We visited on an extremely hot July day and there were only two other visitors on the guided tour. This really is a wonderful house kept as close to its original as its possible to do & so worthy of a visit. The house was built for a well to do citizen of Marblehead & its family, his untimely demise soon after moving into it & a ? repossession by the bank kept the house in near perfect order up until the present day. The walls on the ground & second floor are decorated with hand painted wall paper from England & still bear the tax stamp on the back of them from King George III. While many of the ceramic pieces in the house are of the period rather than of the home itself, there are a number of other items (furniture & Boston banjo clocks which do belong to the house). the upper floors are probably my favourites, more intimate family spaces and while the stairs on those floors are more tricky to negotiate than the grand staircase from first to second floor but it truly is a remarkable building which deserves attention at a modest $5 you cant go wrong!
This building is unique in America. Looks like stonework, but actually built of wood. Unusual old original Wallpaper and interesting furniture
The preservation of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion is something to be seen. Take advantage of their availability and guided tours to see living history through your own eyes. Volunteer Phyllis recently led a fantastic and informative tour with enthusiasm. Looking forward to bringing friends in the future.
Loved the rooms and furnishings? The wallpaper is over 200 yrs old!! It's like stepping back in time
