We live close by and always enjoy hiking blue hills. Have also done their skiing which is great for kids. The museum is cute and has some animals. The lookout tower at the top offers some nice views of Boston.
Been visiting the Blue Hills Trailside Museum since I was a kid...It has never disappointed. Otters Eagles, Deer, Snowy Owls, Flora and Fawna outside for free at the base of Blue Hills. There's a nice little museum and gift shop to visit for a small donation. and you can hike the trail to the top of the hill to the observatory for great views of Boston and the surround towns.
great place to bring young kids. The Trailside is a small area with a few animals if you are looking for something quick to do. Bring some quarters if you want to feed the ducks
Its not very big. But a great place to take little kids for few hours. My favorite part of the little Zoo. Also the Bee Hive, where you can see the inside of the hive. I still love to visit every once in a while. It wont break your bank account.
We took our Daughter hear on Columbus day and they were running special programs that day. It was a great time and we all enjoyed seeing the animals and all the extra things that were going on that day. It is a great trip for a family.
First things first, that is NOT the museum pictured with the white dormers and 2 flags! That building is the State Police barracks that is on a different street about 2.5 miles away. The museum is at the foot of the Blue Hills Ski hill, and looks nothing like the building pictured. We live around the corner from the Trailside Museum, and have spent many days letting our young children run around there, inside and out. They love it! From an adult perspective, it's a bit dingy and small, BUT there's stuff the kids can touch and climb on and through, and it's really a nice, safe space for them. The story times with animals are very sweet, and the staff is kind and flexible. They have a number of seasonal events that are TONS of fun, too. Fall cider days is a favorite of ours. Remember quarters to feed the ducks! Nominal admission of a couple/few bucks, FREE for Audubon members.
Our kids are older now, but we would always make a point to stop in here and check out the animals whenever we came to hike.
This museum is fantastic, especially for kids. Plenty of exhibits to experience and the staff is so friendly and helpful. Afterwards you can go for an easy hike up the mountain.
Nice little museum that showcases the natural history and current wildlife in Blue Hills. It is small, but sweet. Also a good spot to park if you plan to climb to the top of the Blue Hill, which is an easy hike, even with a 4 year old.
I grew up in Milton. As a kid, I loved the museum. When I had kids, I brought them here. They also loved it. Now my grand kids are visiting. They also love it. It is a great place for all ages.
Museum is small but fun; real attractions are the animals outside & the reservation. That's my favorite hiking place.
This is definitely a place that you can go to and spend an afternoon, especially if you like to hike. The museum is small, but gives a good overview of local wild life. Occasionally, there are live animal exhibits. Outside, are a number of animals in habitats. these are animals that have been injured and can't return to the wild. The Otter is especially fun and engaging. You can also take a short or long hike. The highlight is climbing the Blue Hills and getting a view of Boston and the surrounding areas. There are wide trails and more rocky ones. Also trails that can go for several miles into the woods. I've also had a tour of the Weather Station which is really interesting. I recommend, going on a nice day, bringing a picnic lunch and spending several hours between the animals, museum and hiking. There is a fee to the museum, but free for Mass Audubon members. Hiking and viewing the animals is free. This is a great place for families with young children. There is plenty of parking too.
The trails throughout Blue Hills are well marked, but the trailside museum needs a few more displays for the $$ they charge.
Just the right size museum for young children--not too big.
If you want to spend an afternoon with an outdoor experience, get exercise, fresh air, a scenic view and see animals all for FREE, then hike one of the Blue Hills trails to the top. Pack a lunch and walk up the look out tower at the top. You can see the Boston sky line from there. a short walk from there you can visit the weather observatory. There is a gift shop there and a bathroom! In the fall they open the ski lift. For a couple of bucks you can take the ski lift down. The kids love it. At the base of the mountain there are animals; The river otters are a favorite, there are also owls, deer, a fox, turtles, hawks and turkeys. Inside there is a great and inexpensive museum to visit. .If the family isn't exhausted after, a few minutes away there is a playground and Hobart' s pond for swimming in the summer... A great day trip!!
