I enjoyed seeing the Rotch-Jones-Duff house, which was built by wealthy families when whaling was at its peak. The house is very tastefully decorated. There were not many visitors in November 2014, so I received one-on-one attention for a personal tour. I will return to see the garden in the spring.
Very nice historical house to visit. I am not familier with the previous owners but in the Spring and summer there are nice gardens and the house is of classical construction.
Went with a coworker to do a radio interview. What a gem! We really enjoyed our visit and tour of the house. Great history... great stories. Worth stopping in a for an hour or 2.
When the Rotch-Jones-Duff House was built in the 1830s, it was far and away the finest of its type in the old whaling City of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The old house is of the Doric order. And it's a Greek Revival masterpiece. Though I am currently not too pleased with the director (they've had much better ones) since she appears not to be terribly well-informed about architectural accuracy, I still recommend the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum to anyone visiting this historic old City. (Please forgive the fact that the last time the house was painted, the painters hung the exterior blinds upside down). I've brought it to the Director's attention, but she appears not to care enough to do the work to insure they were hung accurately. She appears to have no knowledge of architectural integrity.Nevertheless, the house is largely intact from the heyday of the Whaling Industry, and easily as worthwhile a visit as the Whaling Museum when one visits the old Whaling port of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The R-J-D House and Garden Museum can also be rented as a reception facility.
New Bedford’s Rotch-Jones-Duff House will appeal to those with an interest in New England history, classic architecture, or gardening. For nearly 150 years, this gracious home was owned by a succession of three families who were leaders in the whaling industry. Pick up a visitor’s guide in the gift shop, watch a short video, and walk through the rooms and exhibits at your own pace. We spent about an hour altogether in the house and sitting in the quiet gardens, getting a sense of New Bedford life in the wealthy heyday of the whaling industry. The house is about ½ mile from the Whaling Museum, and on-street parking is available.
Here is an opportunity to see a slice of life when whaling was the major industry in New Bedford. This very well preserved home is authentically furnished with items from the eras of the three families who lived there. Don't miss the beautiful gardens there which complement the lovely house. It would also be a spectacular venue for a wedding, party or event.
This a beautiful historic home which spans a city block. The home was owned by Rotch who made his money in the whaling trade and then was owned by Jones and finally Duff before becoming a museum. The gardens were all in bloom with roses today.
This house museum features the history of the three families that lived there, from the whaling days until the 1960s, so you learn about the old house itself and its rooms are decorated from the different times periods the families lived in the house, and you learn about the history of New Bedford and the neighborhood on County Street that grew up around it. Beautiful gardens in season. Beautiful decorations at Christmas time.
love love this place the flowers ,trees .It's such a beautiful place to take pictures whether they are wedding or any other pictures. Everyone should stop by and see it
Self-Guided with an easy to follow typed narrative. Some of the rooms are a bit rough around the edges but, that enhanced the authenticity of the museum. I will return when the gardens are in bloom as they must be spectacular.
This House and Garden Museum reflects the life of three prominent families who resided in the bbeautiful Greek Revival on County St. in one of New Bedford's Historic Districts. Self guided tours are available daily.
A Greek Revival mansion built in 1836 by one of the richest men in America. The friendly docent gave us an interesting tour of the house. The gardens were very pretty.
really nice historic home, nicely furnished, fantastic detail
It was nice but not really exciting, Newport Mansions way better
When you drive around these sea-faring towns you often see these great captain's mansions and wonder what they look like inside. This is one of the few chances you get to see inside one of these homes and see it in close to the condition it was back in the day. A lovely, must-see attraction
