Audubon does a nice job of keeping this open. We ahve lots of open spaces here but this offers a special place of peace and solitude with the usual Audubon class.
This is not a large area, but take your time and enjoy the varied fauna that makes its home here. Birders can catch glimpses of osprey and wood ducks amongst other birds. Turtles and otters can be spotted on occasion. Great for young families.
My husband and I have been coming to Stony Brook since we were kids, and now we bring our kids. It's a beautiful Audubon site with a loop trail that is easily manageable for small children. Great boardwalk into the marsh where you can see all kinds of birds, insects, turtles, frogs, and other wildlife. Along the trail there are fields, forests, running water, still water, small dams and waterfalls - really a lot of ecosystem variety, in a distance that won't tire out a preschooler. You can do it in under an hour, but if you allow time for stopping and viewing and contemplating it can stretch out to an hour or two.
So much to see here. We took an afternoon walk here with out daughter, it was an amazing place. We took so many pictures of wildlife and the amazing landscapes. If you are looking to try your hand at taking nature photos this is a great place to try. They also have a unique and fun play area for children.
Situated in Norfolk on North street Route 115 is Stony Brook an Audubon Bird Sanctuary with a pond and a circular trail with wooden catwalk bridges that encircle a vibrant marsh full of song birds and pondlfe. This place was my photography professors favorite place. Thanks for the Beautiful gift Mr. Yankee.
