The place can be trouble if the wind is blowing. Conditions on the course were good and the staff friendly and helpful. Good value for the price.
But don't let that stop you. After hearing about how nasty this course is I hesitated trying it until last week. What a great spot! Sure, if you miss the fairway in many places there's a good chance you'll lose your ball. But if you have a large collection of used/found balls and want to just enjoy a round of golf, Widow's Walk has some wonderful views, creative layouts, and some of the most professional-like greens I've played in a non-elite course. The staff was helpful and friendly and we were un-rushed for our round. It was mid-week and mid-day and not very busy, which helped I'm sure. But the layout makes each hole kind of private so anyone waiting on the tee box doesn't appear to be breathing down your neck. Some of the challenges are actually a little scary but fun. Like the 8th hole, where it looks like you have to carry your drive over the Atlantic. But the distance is deceptive and the elevated tee will have you feeling like Rory when your ball lands safely on the other side. Sometimes...Play this course and judge it for yourself. If you're a golfer with a low handicap who likes a challenge, you'll find it here. If you're a golfer who'll never shoot under par but enjoys making at least one great shot on each hole (and won't mind losing a ball or two) you'll enjoy it as well. It's a long and hilly course, though, and if you're not used to walking you might want to consider using a cart. Good luck!
Widow's walk has matured since it first opened, but it still is "target golf". For the good golfer, i.e., someone who shoots in the 80's or below, it's a challenging and entertaining course. For the duffer, it can be a painful experience. Fairways can be narrow, tight on either side of the fairway, and not at all forgiving. There are a number of long carries over "natural areas", which are inaccessable for ball retrieval. The rough is really rough, which is the reason one needs to bring a lot of balls. The far forward tees have a definite advantage over the back tees, so if your wife is a good golfer, and you're not, don't make any bets. The course does have beautiful elevated views of the salt marsh, the ocean, and the river. Photographers would love it. The staff is great. Lastly, they need to get a golf dog to continually patrol the course and chase away the geese.
Widow's Walk is a tough course, narrow, short in lots of places. A shot maker would like the challenge of Widow's, people who like golf balls don't. Course is usually in decent condition, and its public, which is hard to do. Its hard to get to, so maybe thats why its in good shape. Lots of marsh, ponds and impenetrable woods loaded with poison ivy. Built on the sands dunes that filled the back bay of Boston, has some nice scenic views.
Upfront the course is to penal for the average golfer. Stray & you stay in the bushes, grass or whatever the stuff is. Sides of fairways show lack of attention, so balls can end up anywhere. As accomplished golfers, admittedly playing on a windy cool day not conducive to good scores, we found the traps, tees and as stated, off the side of fairways to be in fair to poor condition. Fairways & greens were fine. Having played the course about 7 years ago, the condition is not as good as it was then. If your tee ball leaves something to be desired or is not yet consistently established, then bypass this course till it is. A few goofy holes, obviously planned because of limited land use. Staff was, desk & starter, gracious and extremely pleasant. They must not play the course. All that said, for the value, an internet special, it was worth the experience.
Got to play here on Monday, and the course was actually quite crowded. We drove a cart, which was a good call, given the hills on some holes.Accuracy is at a premium, and I think it's therefore a challenging course. I always heard it was a shot-makers course, and that is an accurate statement. Most holes have multiple challenges, bunkers, water, rough, tight fairways, elevated T boxes. But the course is a ton of fun to play and I can't wait to try again on a future trip to Scituate.Love the back nine.
Have played here many times and recently played first round of the 2014 here on Good Friday, what a treat. While many MA courses are struggling to open and losing greens, WW was in great shape, particularly the greens, which rolled true, as in, no bumps. More than enough undulation to create some havoc. While not a very long course, very challenging and has some great high risk high reward opportunities. Very narrow fairways. Extremely fair for the average golfer (I am a 15 Handicap). Staff is always friendly.Oh, and the price is on of the better values in MA. $74 per twosome, with cart for your entire party up to 4/30/14. Even after that, you can play mid-season for $54 with a cart. My muni that my taxes support costs more than that. I'll be back and would recommend WW to all golfers.
Not the challenge it used to be when it opened...but plenty of bite for the average golfer. I wishe they would trim the brush on the 17th tee box to open up the original vistas....fabulous
This is a beautiful golf course. Owned by the town it is very reasonably priced, $47 weekends. It is maintained much better than a municipal course, think Pongoag but does not get the loving care of say Pembroke Country Club. The greens could use a little more care and it is sometimes hard to say if you are in the rough or not but overall I have never been disappointed with the condition. The course isn't long 6,400 yards from the blues but it is a challenge. If you want to pull out a driver the size of a dinner plate and swing away, I would recommend heading over to Green Harbor in Marshfield. This course rewards accuracy over distance. Fairways are narrow with very unforgiving rough and OB that you don't want to get searching through. Even very good golfers should plan on losing 2-4 balls. Me, a 20+ handicap, I'm closer to a dozen but it is fair, there is always a playable shot, just not always one I'm able to make. From the tees, the holes are beautiful to see. Many are elevated so you have a great view of the hole you are about to play. I.E. the 8th is a 200 yard carry over water but the tee is well over the landing area so it is a very make-able shot. The 17th "signature hole is a par three hitting from an elevated tee to a less elevated green. Left, right and long are a problem. Be on, or be short. The driving range is nothing to brag about but it exist as does a small practice putting green.Generally I prefer to walk but this course really calls for a cart. It has a lot of up and down and some distances green to tee are long. The uphill walk to the tees on the back nine will leave you wishing you spent the extra $10.The clubhouse is OK and getting better. It's a full bar with a good selection of draft beer and the food that has improved greatly over the past year. Good enough that they are open weekends this winter for breakfast.Reservations are made on line through their website: www.widowswalkgolf.com Local residents can make reservations 7 days in advance, everyone else 4 day.As a high handicapper I would not make this my first round of the year, but I'm there by June and enjoy it the rest of the season.
I have loved this course since it opened, but it is definitely not for everyone. If you just want to hit driver all day, then stay away. The holes are generally on the shorter side and very narrow. Many people call it "target golf," but I think it makes you hit a whole lot of different shots. The signature par-3 17th offers a long distance view of the P'town tower on a clear day and a challenging shot, especially when the wind is up. The 18th is a great finishing hole that requires 3 good shots to a two-tiered green. I think my favorite hole is the par-4 13th, which has a narrow tee shot with danger left to a very guarded green with water in the left front and junk in the back and left. It is a workout to walk, but if you are looking to use every club in your bag, this is the place for you.
Extremely difficult for the average golfer... Out of bounds and sight lines make it more challenging than needed
This is a very good public course. It's a pretty short course (6403, 6062, 5482 and 4562 yds) but tricky as the fairways are pretty narrow in spots. 17 is the signature hole. You tee off on top of "old smokey", a big steep hill from which you can see the ocean to the east and the river to the south. If visiting I would suggest using carts as its a little tough to walk. The course is very natural (some folks have nicknamed it "widows rock") so don't expect immaculate landscaping. Bring a lot of balls as it can be tough to locate in the woods. The proshop is very good for a muny (they do carry some women's things which is a heck of a lot more than I can say about other more upscale courses I've played). The bar area is pretty minimal, but they've got a great outdoor covered deck to hang out on after your round or during rain delays. No locker rooms. The staff is exceptional and very welcoming. Afternoon play can get slow but earlier times get filled up quick on the weekends.
Love playing here. Challenging course. Well maintained. Great staff. Everyone always so nice. Food excellent too!
Loved the course layout, scenery, views, and variety of holes. The people in the pro shop and in the pub are very friendly and helpful. Great burgers and fries!
This was my first time playing the course. Beautifully maintained course -greens in ideal shape. You need to be accurate as there are some pretty narrow fairways. The course tests every part of your game. Definitely going back again.
