As a photographer, I try to find new places to take my pictures, and have found so many different scenes at the Sanctuary (which is how we've referred to this place since I was a child) which are beautiful on their own and a great backdrop for models. The place is rather large and a wonderful place to shut off your phone and get lost for a couple hours, come enjoy a quiet lunch at a picnic table, or sit on one of the grassy areas and have a nice picnic with the family.I've brought my family here as well as my last dog, and we have never been in a rush to leave. I do wish they had some more support in being able to clean up after the rude people who don't have the decency to pick up their trash, or who feel the need to break things, but incidents are low seeing as the Sanctuary is in a nice quiet neighborhood.
I've been here two or three times now and I still don't think I've covered the entire property yet.... Great river views... It's real pretty when the leaves are changing.... Worth stopping in for peek....
Explored this park with my wife one morning. Not sure how large the property is as the visitor center was closed but walked the primary trails in about an hour. Potential to be a really nice park if city can invest $$ to improve trails, structures and picnic area. Felt safe being there in mid day but hear there has been concern and wouldn't send my wife and kids there alone (trails can be isolated). Only reason I couldn't give "very good" was the deteriorated and closed facilities.
Like the nature trails and looking at the different forms of nature. Don't like that it is getting runned down and some people have vandalized some areas.
Nice trail to walk, and bring the dogs. One path along the river was closed, but we were able to back track and continue on the loop, and get back to the car. Most paths are very rough, with roots etc. Good for a rustic tour - don't take a stroller !
My family and I love to stop at the grocery store just up the street and picnic in this great little area. There is a picnic area complete with stone grills, you just need to bring some charcoal and your burgers. There are also some wonderful trails to hike, a butterfly garden and wide open fields for kite flying. We love to visit this nearby hidden gem!
I like to take the dog here for walks. The well established trails are an easy walk and can be done in an hour or less. Some parts of the trail are right along the river but most is just woodlands. There is a log cabin shelter that is fun to take photos around. There is plenty of parking and restrooms are open until 5 pm.
Just past Hanaford's Market on Warner Boulevard off 44 west in Taunton you come to a flashing yellow take that right on Cohannet Street. Half a mile up on the left is the entrance to Gertrude Boyden Wildlife Refuge. Open 7am til Dusk. Drive the dirt road and park near the Nature center. Walk the trails or Picnic.Longest trail is 2 miles along the 3 mile river.it ends with a nice view of man made waterfall. swamp trail is fun with a wooden bridge but part of it is closed because of Erosion. Pets are welcome. Fishing is good.I ha ve personally photographed Osprey, Hawks,Herons and Cranes.Turkey, Whitetail Deer, Turtles, Snakes and Endless Song birds of all Varieties. Please come and Support this Sanctuary ran by volunteer staff. Places like this are Rare and are a vast educational resource. bathrooms are available at the nature center.Bring your Bugs spray and Sunblock although theirs plenty of shade trees. See you there.
We visited with a large group of kids & adults.I had no idea that this place existed until very recently. What a hidden gem! There is a building with bathrooms & information. You can take a quick hike or walk for hours. Looked like many great fishing spots. We saw tons of small wildlife as well. You can walk along the river and it ends in a huge man made waterfall. There are picnic tables, an outdoor water fountain and electrical outlets so good spot for a picnic. Because of the weather, lots of the paths were flooded, but most of the paths were very flat & easy to walk.
