Such a shame you can't take pictures of it inside because you want to take the whole house home with you! So stately and beautiful, you can't stop aweing at every opening room!

Small group, a very knowledgeable tour guide, and a wonderful home. Lots of history with this family home. Perfect for a family with older children, since the entire house is basically a museum full of artifacts from 5 generations. A great tour for those wanting to learn more about the Shipping Captains of Salem and how this family survived to current times

At first, I felt as if it would be a waste of money. But the tour guide proved to be quite knowledgeable, and was able to offer answers to many questions about the place, the art, and other aspects of the family. By the time I finished, I was very glad I went.

We didn't know much at all about the Phillips family and was pleasantly surprised with this tour. The home was beautiful, extremely well kept (loved the blue booties we had to put on our feet) and a wonderful step back in time. What we found amazing, however, was the amount of things kept by the family and now shared in this home. From journals, menu's, toys, furniture, cars, carriages to even toilet paper, it's just amazing. Just walking up to the home on Chestnut Street is a treat, what a beautiful New England street especially in the fall.

I don't think many people will take the time to walk 10 minutes from the downtown area to tour the Phillips House, but I would recommend that they do.I was much more than a tour of an old house, it was insight into life in early Salem. The Irish working class, the seafaring trade that was just getting underway, and of course, the reality of living in a big house "back in the day"It was well worth the admission fee and time to go thru it. I think you would enjoy it.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the house and it's occupants. Even though we had not heard of the Phillips family before, it was interesting to see the way they Iived over a span of five generations.

Thanks for the great review and we're thrilled you enjoyed your day at the Phillips House Museum. We know the no photography rule is a bit of a bummer. If you'd like some interior photos to add to your collection, do not hesitate to send an email to PhillipsHouse@historicnewengland.org. We'd be happy to send along some wonderful shots taken by the local staff at LightShed Photography Studio.Sincerely,Julie ArrisonSite Manager

My husband and I had a fabulous tour at the Phillipps House. You put on surgical booties over your shoes so you do not scratch the floor because you can walk anywhere you like in the house. Our tour guide, Amy, was wonderful and extremely knowledgable. For history buffs, this is a great place to visit!

Phillips House is in the heart of a wonderful, historical architecture district which is a pleasure to explore. The house itself is a good example of the period and because of the travels and interests of the Phillips Family has some items in its collection that are out of the ordinary.Be on the lookout for the many special events offered throughout the year, including the annual vintage car show in August and special educations programs in winter. Car enthusiasts will also enjoy seeing the carriage house (which is open seasonally though the main house is open year round).Local residents who enjoy all houses should consider membership in Historic New England, which owns and operates this property along with 35 others in the regions. Members have free admission to all the properties as well as free or reduced admission to special events. Just a few visits/events covers the cost of membership.

We visited the Phillips House during our recent trip to Salem. The tour was very well done. The furnishings are part of the family's collection and thus, quite in keeping with the home. It gives you a view to what it was like to live there 100 years ago.

Philips House is owned by Historic New England. Once of the best things we have ever done was to join Historic New England about 10 years ago We have enjoyed visiting their houses throughout New England (We have visited many of their properties several times). For only $55.00 a year (household membership), you and your family can visit their houses as many times as you want during your membership year. I believe that Philips House is closed on Mondays and is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from November through May. Tours, which are offered every half hour, start at 11 o'clock and end at 4 o'clock. We went to Philips house last Friday. I think this was our sixth visit to the house. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour (with our excellent tour guide) of this amazing house. Since the house and its contents were given to Historic New England by the family, this is a real house that real people lived in. The present fee is $8.00 ($7.00) for seniors and free if you are members of Historic New England. There is also a small store that you can visit before and/or after your tour.

This house is awesome. It is on Chestnut Street which is arguable the toniest street in Salem. There are many Samuel McIntyre houses on this street. The Phillips house shows life of a wealthy Salem family in the early 20th century, though the house itself dates back to the Federal period in the early 19th century. If you are an antique car aficionado, there is a small collection in the carriage house.
