I honestly hadn't read the book before, and went alone when in town on business, yet still enjoyed it! Beautiful little tour and buildings, the guide was amazing!
i took a tour of this house and it was a bit pricey for two people.I found the tour to be long and drawn out and not very interesting at all. i think the most interesting part of the tour was the really skinny hidden staircase in the wall that they let you walk up. Other then that i wish i didnt spend the money
A must see in Salem. The Hawthorne's, The Scarlet Letter, the best of American History, in an area where it all started.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stop here. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and more than willing to answer our questions. We also enjoyed seeing the house Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in (on the same property but a different house). Cute gift shop, beautiful harbor view, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Neat house with so much history - now I just need to read Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House of the Seven Gables". A must see with a surprise or two!
The tour guides were excellent and they did a wonderful job. They were engaging and you could tell that they had a passion for the area and the history of Salem.
Knowledgable guides take you through this fine example of an early colonial home. The home has lovely period furnishings and the harbor side grounds are well maintained. The guides frequently share personal stories to bring the past to life, and of course there is the link to Nathaniel Hawthorne and his book, "The House of Seven Gables" Worth the time.
It was a great tour, our guide was funny, while keeping on topic and very happy and enthusiastic. Her stories about the link with Nathaniel Hawthorne and The House of the Seven Gables was really great.
Great tour. The guide was very informative about the history of the times, the features of the house and the furnishings were beautiful. There is a hidden staircase that you can go up but it's a little narrow. If you have knee problems you might reconsider the climb. There are other outside buildings you can walk to and take your time looking at. The garden was pretty and the gift shop had some very nice items. The price is well worth the visit.
The House of the Seven Gables inspired author Nathaniel Hawthorne to write his novel of the same name in 1851. And touring this historic house certainly inspired me. Built in 1668 the guided tour begins in the house. The friendly and knowledgable Guides escort visitors through most of the interesting rooms. Afterwards visitors can tour the beautiful outside gardens that also provide a lovely view of the ocean. If you are a history and/or literary enthusiast you will enjoy visiting this place.
We has a great time visiting The House of the Seven Gables. There was a very interesting tour of the house and grounds. I would also recommend that you check out the country's oldest candy shop across the street. Also, if you are into geocaching you'll find one outside the house (where no admission is required).
We greatly enjoyed our tour of this historic house. The guide was wise and helpful. Be prepared for small passageways and stairs.
Enjoyed the information that they gave in each and every room. Amazed at how "short" people were back in the day... ceilings are low....Had been here as a child on a school field trip, but didn't remember much. so it was great to have the chance to do it again. A family affair for children, but not under 7 I would say... enjoy, its a great take
This has two buildings, Nathaniel Hawthorne's birthplace and his aunt's house which inspired "the house of the seven gables". Both are very neat too look at with old artifacts and the guide I had was very knowledgeable. There is something very cool that they show you but if you haven't read the book I don't want to spoil it!
I LOVED learned about the history behind this house. Even bought the book in the store after to read about it! My ONLY downfall was I LOVE taking pictures and I wasn't allowed to here :/ not even with flash off. I wish I would have, it was very beautiful and would have loved to share pictures with my students (in college to be a teacher), and also I think they allowed way too many people in at once for our tour. There was about 24 people including our instructor and it just felt very rushed because the people behind us wanted to see and you really couldn't get that personal time to reflect on the history! But other then that the tour guide was very informative& know a lot! :)
This is the top attraction in Salem. The house is gorgeous both interior and exterior and the collections are wonderful.
