Did not think this would be as great as it was. There are many countries and time periods in the collection.....enjoyed most the French impressionists, they have a Renoir, Degas, and Monet in this room, but also a lot of the American painters, such as the Hudson River School, etc. They even have a Calder mobile, and some very modern American realist and super realist pieces. Also a large Japanese prints exhibit, and a very eclectic and somewhat out of place collection of snow globes. An unexpected find!
This museum may be small but the exhibits are first rate. The art must have been selected by a professional curator rather than just be donations from locals.Be sure to double-check the map on where to turn for the museum. It is slightly tucked away. There is a large parking lot.
The Fine Arts Museum is only 1 part of the Quadrangle. The Fine Arts has a good selection of all genre of art including an occasional traveling exhibit for an additional admission. The current exhibit of American Modern Art is not worth the extra admission price. Incidentally, the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden is just to the outside of this building.
The museum is currently running an art forgery exhibit that we enjoyed very much. It is small, but the art is enjoyable. It is part of a group, and admission is for all museums in the Quadrangle. They do a AAA discount as well as student and seniors too.
If you take the stairs down into the basement of the Science Museum at the Quadrangle, you'll find a hidden treasure. There is a small but very nice live animal exhibit and aquarium there that many people miss seeing. Also, bring your camera. Photography is welcome and there are many wonderful exhibits you'll want your friends and family to see.
It's free, it's cozy, it's welcoming, it's so clean for a public park, it's inspirational and it's surrounded by places to sit and museums. I'd go back to Springfield JUST for this!
This was very nicely done. Not really all that big but a very eclectic collection of lots of stuff to look at.
For a small city this museum complex has everything, including a D.Seuss National Memorial Sculpture garden.
We were there when the leather jacket ehibit was there. So much fun to see the jackets and walk around the corner to see a Monet. I must admit my husband and I spent more time with the leathers than the masters.
I'm not too found of paintings but this museum was included in the price of all, so my husband and I did spend some time wandering around in here. My favorite part was the collection of art that was made out of "trash." Very cool and interesting to see familiar things such as tide boxes and gum wrappers made into art!
Overshadowed by the Wadsworth Atheneaum in Hartford, this art museum is also worthy of recognition for having splendid works of Art from the Late Medieval Period(Spinello Aretino,Nicolas Frances)up to the 20th Century(Theo Rhysellberghe,Maximillian Luce)by European painters..It also has a fine collection of American paintings, especially by Erastus Field.Personal favortes two days ago were;Spinello Aretino's"Madonna and Child in Glory With Crucifixion",Goswyn Vander Weyden's"Triptych With Crucifixion".Sebastian Vrancx'"Clothing the Naked",Emanuel de Witte"Old Church Interior,Amsterdam",Giovanni Pittoni the Younger's"Healing of Antiochus",Giovanni Paolo Pannini's"Arh of Titus",Alexandre Dunuoy's"Landscape With Cascade and Fortified Castle",Claude Monet's"Grainstack",Maximillian Luce's"The Seine",amd Andree Buellan's"Sixth Avenue,New York. This art museum is part of Springfield's delightful cultural Quadrangle which includes other museums. The temporary exhibit of Beatles photographs was interesting, but I prefered their wonderful paintings in this smaller, less visited art museum..
We spent a couple of hours there and after an hour at a museum that is enough before your mind turns to mush. There are four museums on the grounds and each museum has a different type of exhibit. Some permanent and some on loan. I would be showing my ignorance to try and explain the exhibits that we took in but it won’t be very long until we return to continue and pick up on our visit. You would be doing yourself an injustice not to take advantage of this marvelous museum. Perfect for children and adults.
This museum is not so big that it's overwhelming. An hour is enough for the average. There is something for everyone to see. A large display of Beatles photos from the media at the time on display. This is one of a group of museums at the location.
We just returned from a special exhibition called "American Dialect" at the D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, part of a complex of museums in Springfield. If you are travelling on I-91 it's just a six or eight minute drive off the interstate and you should not miss the museums. Their shows are often a little offbeat (American art between the wars, aboriginal paintings) but always fascinating. The permanent collection is small but excellent, especially the Dutch paintings and their permanent display of early 20th century American. If you have kids, or even if you don't, the Dr. Suess museum is an absolute must. There's yet another museum with Tiffany glass windows and spectacular Chinese cloisonne, and a bunch of other stuff like you'd find in grandma's attic if grandma was an international traveler and collector.
The museum has agreat variety that is appealing to all ages and I found it enjoyable to have the local historical and natural aspects presented alang with the world's points of interests.
