The Atheneum is a town treasure. The library is in an historic building, for one, including the Great Hall upstairs which is also a fine research facility. The staff is always accommodating and goes to great lengths to get a book, a CD, a movie, for you to enjoy.
A fabulous place for someone of any age. I go sometimes just to read the paper. Really a unique library and very nice!
This isn't just another library. It is a gathering place for the town, a place for speakers, presentations, exhibits etc. Of course, you can browse through the books & find all kinds of unique old volumes, with island history abounding. But just to set in one of the antique chairs, looking at the portraits on the wall, and knowing how long this venerable institution has been contributing to island life is enough for me. If you want to hook up to their wi fi, go inside. This isn't the NY public library, and the rather spinsterish librarian scolded me for sitting on the steps with my computer. Not open Sundays, which is a shame, as so many people are on the island, and in town on Sundays.
As libraries go, this is by far one of the coolest I've been to. Gorgeous architecture and located in the center of downtown Nantucket makes for a must stop when you are touring the sights. It's a nice escape from the bustle of the streets and worth your time to peruse the shelves.
This is a wicked cool library open to the public. It doesn't take long to tour and there are interesting painting, and other artwork and artifacts to view.
This is a wonderful place to visit while Nantucket.Beautiful historic building. Nice place to relax after a day of adventuring.Beautiful temporary displays. Recent incredible Scrimshaw display.
Enjoyed a quick stop at Atheneum on recent visit to Nantucket. Liked quaint atmosphere and scrimshaw exhibit in a quiet, working library.
Saw a great video as well as generally a wonderful venue. My wife & I love the island, & in fact plan on retiring to Nantucket. I think all interested parties should pay a visit to this wonderful venue.
Magnificent setting. Very helpful librarians. A great place to go. Just walk in and soak up the atmosphere.
I loved the nooks and crannies for reading, the great collection, knowledgeable staff members. The garden is quite lovely, although as a visitor,I could not check out books to go read in the garden.
We love to visit libraries on our travels and have photos of many special ones. Unfortunately, at this library, you are greeted with a sign stating that no photography is allowed. That is shame given the beauty and unique history of the building. It is understandable that flash should be prohibited, and that maybe one needs to request permission, avoid individual patrons, etc., but prohibiting all photos? I hope this policy will be reconsidered.
It's big, beautiful inside and out and staffed with intelligent professional people. For a place with a permanent population of 10,000-ish it's flat out amazing!
it is a library and a history center for the area. it is worth a trip to stop by there. they also have alot of speical event.
Get a membership and sign up online. You won't be sorry. Staff is soooo friendly and helpful. I went to movies they offered with popcorn and lemonade. Sit and read or use the computers surrounded by scrimshaw, old paintings, and sculptures of sea captains and mermaids. I could spend all day there. Take advantage of their many events and talks-it's well worth it !!!
Stopped at the Library on my last visit to Nantucket. They had book report dioramas using peeps! So cute and creative. They had different categories for elementary, teens, adults, and family. The dioramas incorporated the peeps as the characters of the books. "The Great Gatsby" had some peeps with jewels on them. Very cute and creative. Want to do this in my hometown.
