This is not your typical museum. The interior oasis is remarkable. The entire facility is warm and welcoming. Each room has a laminated sheet that gives information on each painting. We did the audio tour (we typically don't) and I highly recommend this approach for this museum. Check your coat for free upon entering and the enjoy the Gardner collection which includes portraits of Isabella as well as Rembrandt's self portrait. You can easily spend 2 hours or more here.
Was told about this place by the hop on hop off tour guide and it didnt disappoint. Because everything was so white outside the garden inside was sooo green. No photographs allowed on the upper floors but that is a good thing. Would highly recommend a visit.
Been so wanting to see this golden nugget museum and the total experience was better than I could have dreamed. Had a great lunch in the cafe, saw first class art that is housed in a building designed to hold the treasures. Just a perfect outing.
The new wing is gorgeous, and the public spaces very inviting. I was able to attend a concert in the new concert hall, visit the "living room" and gift shop, and eat a delicious lunch in the on site restaurant. The main museum remains an interesting collection in a gorgeous setting with an awesome inner courtyard, made more understandable by a one hour highlights tour with a dozen.
I didn't plan for the amount of time I spent here! Gardner's mandate that NOTHING be moved makes for an imperfect viewing experience—but that is part of the joy of this place. There are gems to be found around every corner (and under every table), but you'll need to look for them. Totally worth a visit and looking at the (sometimes-hard-to-find) room cards. No photos allowed except in the courtyard area, but that makes it even more special. WOW.
The Gardner is special at all times, but check the daily and weekly schedule for special events. These can be the highlights of your visit. This is a popular venue, so expect moderate crowds. Relax in their café for some very good food. And right around the corner is the Museum of Art - a full day trip.
A one of a kind gem of a museum. A very personal collection of art and artifacts mainly European with some world art as well. The spirit of its creator feels alive and I would recommend it especially on cold winter days when the central yard is warm and welcoming, transporting to another place and time.
An extraordinary eclectic collection! The collection was purchased and displayed by Isabella Gardner. It was her request that all displays remain as she placed them.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston's Fenway is the most fantastic museum I had ever seen!!! Just visit it & have your own experience & certainly Boston Highlight !!!
This museum has a wonderful interior and collection and is a must to be seen when in Boston. It is a short walk from the Museum of Fine Arts.
If you are interested in art, architecture and collections, go to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
We spent a wonderful day with our daughters. The day began with a delicious lunch at the restaurant located in the museum. We listened to the headset tour. You can stop and start the tour as you like. They also have activities the children can take part in at the end of the tour. The history of the building and the collector, Isabella Stewart Gardner are quite interesting and many books have been written based on her history and the infamous robbery that took place at the museum. This museum is well worth the visit. When you are done here you can head to the Museum of Fine Arts.
It's the Gardner but better. The addition allowed the museum to reopen some of the galleries that had been shut in the past. It's a quirky museum since Isabella Stewart Gardner stipulated that the art be arranged exactly as she wanted and the main museum is showing its age with multiple leaks in multiple rooms on the day we were there.Definitely make it up to the third floor to see John Singer Sargent's portrait of the lady herself. Hard not to feel sad passing the empty frames where the stolen art was placed.
Ducked in for a couple of hours yesterday. This was my first time visiting the Gardner Museum since the addition in 2012. The new wing has some lovely greenhouses with orchids as well as other beautiful plants. This is a very small exhibit however. The home, which Isabella actually lived in for twenty years, is a masterpiece. Her collections of tapestries from the 1500-1600s is breathtaking! She collected three stories of rare painting, sculpture, wood carvings, tapestries, china, letters, photographs, instruments, etc. from her travels to Europe and Asia. The presentation is amazing. How many museums only have a "please do not touch" sign as the only barrier between you and a Rembrandt painting or a 1600 Flemish tapestry? The collection is extensive and you could easily spend a day there. There is a small café for food and a nice gift shop. It is an easy walk to the Museum of Fine Arts from here. There a several parking garages nearby and a host of fine restaurants in the vicinity. At $15 ($5 for students) it is a real bargain. If you have never gone to this museum do yourself a favor and see it. You will not be disappointed.
We went two weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The central garden is very impressive...four stories surrounding this carefully preserved slice of greenery. The museum has an interesting collection of art, and we didn't try out the sit down restaurant (not a cafe, by the way, so don't expect a casual place to grab coffee), but we'll definitely go back in the spring or summer to check out the outside garden.
