This should be the starting point for anyone who is new to the Vineyard. The houses are beautifully painted and maintained (a requirement for purchasing them) and surround the tabernacle (itself a pretty nice center piece for outdoor events). Illumination and a number of other events happen here, making it a great place to plan a night out for in summer. If you want to do more than simply house watch and take pictures, there is a little museum towards the water that shows what the inside of the Gingerbread houses would have looked like when they were used in Colonial times (including daily necessity antiques from that period).Once you get done circling the pathway you can exit right out into Oak Bluffs (sports store on the right, Sharky's Cantina on the left) and continue further into the city. Parking isn't really possible in this area unless you own or rent the home yourself, so you will need to park on a side road and make your way here. Take the time to visit the campgrounds, when you're telling people about your time on the Vineyard they will be asking you what you thought about the houses.

On a girls trip with 6 other women and I must say I loved the Gingerbread cottages. Don't miss seeing them!

A beautiful reminder of the past, with the survival of the Tabernacle, Church and cottages. The museum gives an idea of what it would have been like in the past, living in such small houses

On an island with many natural environmental treasures, but few urban architectural experiences, this is a must see. Fresh off the Boat (FOB) must see as “First See”. The pictures are great, but it needs a walk around to experience. You are flooded with questions of how could this not have been commercialized or eaten by the rich until it had absolute no soul (in hind sight good choice of words) left. Never thought much about hugging a Methodist, but if they kept all this together for 150 years we own them much, and it gives thought, to me anyway, of all we must have lost under less watchful eyes.

I have never seen anything like this ... Beautiful colorful cottages in a peaceful neighborhood . Walk around, take pictures but be respectful as you see people live in these houses.

Not to be missed such quaint gingerbread houses all painted in so many colours with individual appeal. A lovely peaceful walk around with the Tabernacle in the centre to rest the legs and absorb the atmosphere. The church was closed unfortunately. There were several people walking around and taking photographs but everyone had the respect of peace and quiet for the residents

This area was also part of our road trip....the history, and all the small cottages, were amazing......we drove all the way thru, and just took it all in...

The Campground is right off Circuit Ave and always makes for a great walk. We've walked there during the day and evening. Its easy to get lost at night walking through as the small streets are going everywhere. If you like looking at old cottages, this is the place. Some are quite small and others fairly large. Great looking architecture. We should have stopped by the little museum but were running out of time. Next time!

A group of very special Gingerbread cottages around a very historic green. It is just a short walk from the ferry terminal - don't miss it - well worth a visit and a photo opportunity

What a strange title for an attraction - nothing campground about it. This is a quaint neighborhood with adorable cottages (they call them gingerbread cottages) that is just a joy to wander around. By far my favorite thing that we did while on Martha's Vineyard. I wish TA would rename this Gingerbread Cottages as we found this attraction through the information center in Oak Bluffs, not through Trip Advisor.

It's a throwback in time to stroll the campground, especially in the early morning with our coffee. Such beautifully preserved cottages, what a history! Visit the museum or take a guided tour.

The Campground is a maze of streets wrapping around tiny gingerbread-like cottages. The cottages are small summer homes, mostly built in the late 1800's, that took the place of the tents that encircled the Tabernacle. Brightly colored, they are a photographers dream. It's easy to get turned around in there, so listen for the main roads if you get lost.

Just behind the shops on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs is the Campground, a maze of tiny Victorian cottages that are sprinkled around the tabernacle in a rainbow of gingerbread decoration painted in whimsical colors. Visit on Illumination Night for a truly magical experience when all the lanterns are lit!

Unlike anything else, must go, must see to appreciate, a unique setting with very characterful homes

Take a leisurely stroll back in time...adorable gingerbread houses each with a different design and color scheme. Residents take great care of their homes and the landscaping is outstanding. Had Lobster Rolls at the Campground Cafe (which benefited local church) and it was so peaceful sitting on a bench in the quiet of the day, enjoying the weather while looking at the Tabernacle Pavilion built in 1879, imagining the events that have taken place there through history.
