This is an absolute marvel of beauty to stop and view the mountains. However, Gov. O'Malley cut the budget some years back & closes it down in the winter months, when it is absolutely beautiful during the winter time.
The view to the east of the rest area is spectacular all year round, any time of the day. Early mornings are quite lovely when there is a little fog. Sunsets are usually very colorful.
this place gives just a snap shot of the lower lands sloping below in an easterly view. There are restrooms on either side of the highway and a footbridge to connect. The facility overlook building itself was closed and on a breezy winter day made for standing outside unpleasant! You'll be back in the car in a hurry.
We stopped at the rest stop and must say that this was one of the most scenic spots we have been to in a while. They did an amazing job of cutting through the mountain and then designing it so a rest stop could be constructed with amazing views of the valley. If you are traveling on I-68 in this area take a few minutes and stop by to check out the mountain/valley views.
Great view of MD from the Parking area the information plaques need replaced as you can not read a lot of them telling about the cut through the mountain.
The view is very nice. You can take pictures of the valley below. You can also go up the steps & take pictures of the cut of the mountain or stand on the bridge over the road for pictures. Restroom are there plus limited vending machines. Nice place to get out & have little picnic or walk your pet.
Sliding Hill looks like it could drop out onto the highway in next 1000 years, and great vistas of Allegany/Blue Ridge mountains . Easy smooth climb to vista point.
I love driving through the cut out through the Mt.... It's so beautiful to see all the views from the different areas youth can view the Mt's an valleys from... It's also so awesome in the winter when sideling hill is covered in ice in the winter!!!
But first, stop at the rest area....they have a nice bridge to stand over the highway, and a stair case to get higher and closer to the hill..both have great views, and neat interests for folks of all ages. There are potty facilities as well.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sideling_Hill
