from hwy 15, head east on 28 about 50 ft. Turn right at brown park sign, left at railroad tracks, and cross 1 lane bridge. Park car.If you walk east like we did, you'll see dry canal and pleasant forest, but no lock-houses.Another walker told us the lock-house is about 1 mile walk along towpath to northwest of parking lot, boarded up but still pretty. Maybe next time!
These lockhouses are a real gem. Its true they have no power, and no water, but they are beautiful and scenic. There is plenty of china, and glasses, and tables and chairs inside. The two upstairs bedrooms each have two full size beds, with trundles below (ie 8 beds). There is no queen size bed, and each bed has a camp style mattress and a bedspread. Each bedroom has a old fashioned basin, and one a water jug, for washing with water we hauled from the Potomac. Downstairs, there were two lanterns and two emergency gallons of drinking water, as well as an ax and a maul. We needed to split firewood for the fire ring, which had a nice clean well built grid. What else? fire extinguishers, guide books, brooms, rugs. We loved the trains. Brought earplugs, which were totally unnecessary, although note it was october, and we had the windows closed. To do - we rode our bikes up to Harper's Ferry and had lunch. Next time we'll come when its warmer and ride the few miles to Brunswick and rent kayaks. The kayak company will pick you up from Point of Rocks and bring you back.
The Lockhouse is in a secluded and beautiful setting, with tall trees all around and amazing historical character. Visitors must be ready to rough it - there is no electricity, heat, or water. You must bring all your own bedding, including pillows, blankets, mattress pad, and linens. There are no cooking pots, only long forks for roasting hotdogs over the fire. However, the grill over the fire ring is very functional and can be raised and lowered, and plenty of firewood is supplied, so cooking outdoors is relatively easy. Trains pass nearby and will awaken visitors at night. You must clean the Lockhouse before you leave. The C&O Canal has great walking and biking trails with several lockhouses along the way. Right beside the river. Beware when it rains the path can get very muddy!
