We were lucky enough to be the second ones on the Indian Tulip trail over the weekend. The weather was cold, but the hike was enjoyable. The map we picked up didn't show where the scenic overlook was located, so make sure to mark this down when you head up there. Great little hike.
The highest waterfalls in Maryland are here at Swallow Falls State Park! Many people come to this area for Deep Creek Lake, however, for sheer beauty, Swallow Falls is awesome! There is a 1.25 mile walking trail that travels along the Yough river. In certain areas along the trail there are overhanging rocks as big as a small house overhanging the trail. Many black bears live in this park. For those with physical issues there is a handicap access point that takes you to Muddy Creek Falls, the tallest waterfall in Maryland. For those who wish to camp there are camp sites available.
Enjoyed the fall foliage in the Deep Creek area. This is one of the most beautiful lakes we've ever seen. Outstanding scenery and lots of things to do in the area.
I visited the lake many times, both warm and cold times of the year. There are a lot of things to do and plenty places to stay in. Renting was never a problem. WISP resort is a good place to stay and really conviniently located (especially for skiers and snowboarders in the winter). Different attractions are near by, including golf, ski, water rafting, parks and more.
The lake is gorgeous and the park around it is also beautiful. In the visitor center we got some info about trails. We took a stroll in the area around the lake and then we walked towards the old mine. It was really pleasant. Lots of fall colors. MD residents pay a fee of $3 pp, non residents $5 pp.
Fairly attractive regional destination. Not many good restaurants, have to drive a bit if you want variety. Somewhat isolated, nice average landscape with wooded hills, large lake. If you're adventurous, try hiking in the state parks nearby or kayaking on the local small rivers, which are very rough and exciting. This "destination" could use some B&B's and a few high quality eateries, plus tearing down a few seedy out-of-date, run-down motels. Okay for a day or two, but certainly not a week.
Deep Creek has so much to offer in every season. My husband and I went on an unseasonably cold first weekend in October, so enjoyed many of the local hiking and biking trails to ourselves. The lake is beautiful and there are tons of national parks to explore. We biked through Deep Creek National Park (great visitor center, picnic area, marked trails and visitor center), and hiked in Swallow Falls National Park (great parking and helpful visitor center). We also hiked Savage River National Forrest (the Margraff Plantation Trail and the Monroe Run Trail) -- but note of caution: There are no trail maps available on site anywhere in the national forrest -- prepare ahead of time if you'll be hiking in Savage River State Park! We enjoyed eating at Mountain State Brewing Company, Lakeside Creamery, and Dutch's. We had a great stay at Carmel Cove Inn B&B, where you can borrow canoes, bikes (and weather permitting snowshoes and cross country skis!).
Our family really enjoyed our vacation to Deep Creek this summer. We stayed in a lovely rental in the DC Highlands. The views were breathless. We had a great time kayaking on the lake along the Deep Creek State Park beaches. Even though we had rain for two days, we still had a great time. I sat out on our deck and read and enjoyed the views of the lake and mountains. We enjoyed the quaint shops and eateries in Deep Creek and nearby Friendsville.
A great place to get away for a cozy, romantic stay for two. Or for two couples. Or for a family. In essence, you can make of it what you want. Hiking? Fishing? No problem. Boating? Water skiing? Ditto. A few good restaurants within easy reach. And the lake itself is truly delightful, replete with coves and beautiful foliage. I highly recommend it.
Nice vacation spot. Lake is clean and easy to use. Rental process very easy and efficient. Don't rent your boat from Silver Tree Marina ! We checked out an inboard sea ray and all propellers had some damage when we took it out. Two days later with a different person checking us in he said there was a little more damage so he refused to refund our $250. Instead charged us $50 for more damage to an already damaged prop. After spending ~ $ 1100 for a two day rental This is an under handed way to make a little more profit. Next time I will rent from another marina.
Deep creek lake is so clean and pretty. it is smaller than I thought it would be but over all was very nice and pretty.
We stayed at a very nice vacation rental home during the 4th of July 2014 week. Enjoyed the pontoon boating on the lake --beat a storm. Watched fireworks from Wisp Resort. Most people were nice, especially others, also, visiting from out of state. Views here are beautiful.
We have stayed at the 2 B & B's that are lakeside and loved them both! These are the pricey side but worth every penny. It is such a great treat to be able to leave your room and jump off the dock into the clean, clear water. We discovered that The Wisp rents stand up paddle boards which we will be sure to do next time!
Had an interesting experience at Ace's Run tonight. After we got the yummy pasta, the power went out because of a thunderstorm. The staff and management had to shut down the kitchen (which was sad) but they were SO nice and concerned about the customers, that it made it all right. We had just gotten served, and finished our meal in a pleasant dim light. The pasta night was fun, with people able to choose the meat, the sauce, veggies, and pasta. Then it is made right before your eyes. People were disappointed that the kitchen was closed, but the staff showed their colors under the strain. There is some talk about a "make up night". We'll watch for it, 'cause it was gooood! Normally on Wednesday, they might do it again this week.
Loved the area. Very scenic (coming from Baltimore). Lots to do if you enjoy the outdoors. Very relaxing if you find the right spots. May be a challenge to keep kids occupied if you are looking for theme parks, but the water sports and hiking are good.
