They have wonderful hiking areas and lots of birdlife. There are alwways things to do as a family with kids of all ages. There are many wildlilfe programs. The center itself is worth the visit with interactive exhibits.
Me, my husband, and dog went for a three mile walk in the north trails. It was nice to be out in nature with few signs of man made objects. Not many attractions per say on these trails, just you and the woods and meadows. We came across two little snakes. South trails have more scenic trails.
Informative videos about the work of the Refuge and good displays throughout the museum, with walking trails for the more hardy or when the weather is cooler.
It must be deer season, because you can't go anywhere around here without seeing one (or three). But Patuxent Research Refuge is unique because of its intern-guided nature tours, self-guided trails and wealth of plant, bird and animal life. The lake was covered with lilies! We spotted several bikers, runners, even fishermen on the lake as we ambled our way through the forest. Simply amazing!
Good for both adults and children. The saving of Whooping Cranes from extinction was accomplished here and you will be able to see what they did.
