the tour was very low key and informative much enjoyed. We also enjoyed the wine tasting and a little picnic outside that we prepared ourselves with some of their wine.
Just back from an afternoon at Elk Run. Did a tasting, bought some of the wine to take home along with some wine, very good cheese and bread to eat while listening to the Celtic entertainment. Peat & Barley, who are just wonderful. The desert wine "Sweet Catherine" is excellent, and the Sangria they made from it was perfect for a warm summer afternoon. They were 99% of the way to an "excellent" rating, but .... walking back to the car, my wife was called to by someone (owner?) who said we couldn't take the wine glasses from the tasting, nor the plastic plate we had the cheese & bread on, with us. Huh? We spent almost $200 and they were worried about loosing a plastic plate? I've been to a heck of a lot of wineries for tastings, and never, ever did they not include the glasses. Some even promise a free tasting if you bring their wine glass back the next time. Thanks for ruining an otherwise fine afternoon ....
Took some time in our trip to try some Maryland wine and choose this quaint little winery. Although the power was out, we were still accommodated by a very friendly young lady. The wine was very good.
We have two or three favorite wines from this vineyard, and the rest of the wines are certainly worth trying. There is an outdoor area that can be used for events or just a quiet moment. The vineyard does not ship its own wines, it uses a distributor instead, so shipping wines to other states can be a bit problematic. Overall, this vineyard is worth a visit. Since there are quite a few vineyards in the general vicinity, one could certainly make a day of it.
My girlfriend and I recently visited Elk Run Vineyards during the Antietam Highlands Wine Trail weekend. As part of the weekend's festivities, the vineyard was providing barrel samples as part of their tastings. The tastings were hosted by Elk Run co-owners Fred and Carol Wilson. The Wilsons were quite entertaining as they led the group thru the tasting that compared the vineyard's current releases to those wines still aging in the barrels. The Wilsons good natured ribbing of each other led some in the group to suggest the take their "act" on the road or to Las Vegas. And, the placement of an Elk Run bottle of wine in a recent episode of the TV show House of Cards led to more good natured fun. As for the wines, they were quite drinkable with the cabernet and merlots standing out. Although our tasting ended near the vineyard's closing time, we were allowed to enjoy a final glass of wine with no rush or worries by the staff. As opposed to the glossy tasting rooms you may encounter at wineries in Northern Virginia, Elk Run's facilities are quite rustic and down home. But, the tasting room fits perfectly with the laid back and friendly atmosphere. Elk Run is definitely worth a stop during your next visit to the area.
Tried out recent event at Elk Run: Yoga and Wine. If you like yoga and you like wine -- try Yoga and Wine in the Vineyard, at Elk Run Vineyards and Winery. It combined an hour-long session of yoga followed by a wine-tasting. Yoga House owner Jennifer Topper has held two sessions so far, one at Serpent Ridge Winery and the one at Elk Run, with an additional one planned for September. The Elk Run event started at 7 p.m. with over an hour of outdoor yoga. It was overcast but not raining, but fortunately there was a tent so a little rain wouldn't have made much of a difference. Atlhough it's a cool idea for "girls night out," there were supportive boyfriends and husbands also participating -- so also an idea for date night.Following the yoga, we went in for wine tasting. We got to select 8 wines to taste from their list of 16. Only one - the sparkling wine - was unavailable for tasting. It was your typical wine tasting with plenty of good information on the wines and vineyards. The sommeliers were very nice, informative, and helpful, and made us feel comfortable. It's worth noting that Elk Run only uses its own grapes.Read more about wine and yoga at Elk Run at http://www.midatlanticdaytrips.blogspot.com/2013/08/yoga-and-wine-in-vineyard.html.
I love going to Elk Run. The wine is very good and reasonably priced. The music on Friday nights (Wine Down Friday) is sometimes good sometimes soso, but it's nice to have some music to accompany conversation. Sometimes it's hard to hear and you might want to situate yourself back aways from the stage.
Recently visited Elk Run on a Sunday while out motorcycle riding. They have some very good wines to enjoy, my only issue is the overall appearance of the tasting room and grounds. They are very cluttered and could use some updating and cleanup. As I said earlier, the wines are very good, but it lacks curb appeal and that's part of the winery experience...enjoying your surroundings.
We had a wine day and travelled to four wineries in the Frederick/Sykesville area and Elk Run was one of them. We had a wine tasting a bought a bottle to bring home. I was so glad that we stopped here.
Recently attended a tasting party. The assortment and quality of wines was good to very good. We were unaware of Elk Run prior to this but will now look for more of their products. Unfortunately , would have to agree with the comment "DISINTERESTED TEENAGE STAFF." She must be a family member because the owner was present... He was friendly and informative.
I have been to Elk Run a few times to have a picnic with friends. As the other reviewers mentioned there is not a lot of space inside the tasting room. Some wineries have the setup to have a big party inside, others do not.During the warmer months Spring, Summer and Fall they have a bunch of picnic tables set up in the back. Friday evenings and Saturday & Sunday afternoons they will have low-key live music. Fridays I believe they ask for $5 for the wine down Friday event. They have a nice variety of wines with some dry reds and a couple sweeter wines too. This is definitely one of my favorite wineries to buy a bottle and hang out with friends in a beautiful and relaxing setting. It is always a good idea to call first when visiting a winery to see if they are doing tastings, because sometimes they are having a special event.
I enjoyed all six wines in that I tasted (I thought five dollars was a bargain for six two ounce tastes). The parking is easy. Three of the six wines were quite sweet, which did not appeal to all in our group. Otherwise I would ditto the comments made by other reviews on yelp: the indoor space for tasting is not appealing, staff is indifferent. Most importantly, CALL AHEAD for hours. The brochure from the Frederick tourist center said the winery was open on Saturday until 6 PM. We arrived at 4:20 and were served. Eight more customers arrived shortly afterwards (4:40 and 4:45) and were turned away. Apparently the last tasting was at 4:30 PM that day. I would come again but with lower expectations.
A small vineyard, we were sad that the cafe/gift shop was so small. I'd be afraid to visit when it is crowded on a not so pretty day. However, when it is pretty (luckily been there on two pretty days), they have a nice grounds with which you can throw down a blanket or sit at a picnic table. The staff are all friendly and willing to talk about the wine. A very homey, comfy feel.
